oABiNE FOR ADDING-MACHINES;-
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented cages. 1 906.
Application filed March 5, 1906. Serial No. 804.353.
2 To a whom/it'may mncernv Be it known that I, AUcUsriN HENnnioks, a citizen of the United States, residing at .Grand Rapids, in thecounty of Kent and '5 St ate of Micl-iigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cabinets for Adding-Machines; and 1 do hereby decl fire the fole lowing to: be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,'such as will enable oth- IQ ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to 7, make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in cabinets for adding-machines and analogous devices; and its Qb ect is toprovide a case for 15 inclosing' the machine and also adapted to forms. supportfor a book or booksi1iconvenientrelation tothe machine when said case is opened for use, to form a convenient and secure inclosure for the machine adapted to be opened and closed without moving the machine, and-to provide the same with various' new and useful features hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in theclaiins'.
, My device consists, essentially, of a horizontal stationary bed to support the machine, a
case movable on the bed and adapted to cover the machine or to uncover the same and also adapted to support a book or otherarticle 3b in convenient relation to the machine when opened, said case being opened at one end to permit the same iJO'HlOVG from above the machine, together with an end closurefor the case at one endof the bed and adjacent to the nia- 3-5 chine, said'closure being adapted to turn to a horizontal position when opened and. to suport a book or other article in convenient ro ation to the inachino and to lturii to vertical position to close the end of the case, an d in va- 4o 'rious other novel features, as will more fully appear'b'y reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective representation of iny device opened 'oiitJ'or use; Fig. 2, the
45.5:t1fi0 of the dcvicewhihi closed; Fig: 3 a
slightly-enlarged end view of the case with the supporting parts ofthe same in transverse section, and Fig. -'.i: a longitudinal sec-, tion ol'- the cas as in closed position.
Like iiiiinbcrs rcler to like parts in all of the iigin'cs. v
1 represents a horizontal bed or table of any (ibii'vcluent dimensions and'supportcd in any convcnidiitnianiicr. [Upon this bed and 5 near one end '15 on the inside of the case.
thoreoljs placed the addingin'achinc, type-writer, or ot'n'er analogous device, shown in Fig. 1. p
2 is a movable case closed at front, rear, top,-and one end and open at the other end and at the bottom. The top 3 of this case is preferably inclined and is in proper position .to support a book in convenient relation to the machine when the device, is open and to cover theniachnie when the same 1S closed.
4- is an endclosure for the case, the lower portion 9 of which is fixed in vertical position.
near one end of the bed 1, the upper portion 4 being hinged thereto, as at 8, and adapted to turn to; horizontal position and supported when thus turned upon brackets 5. When turned to vertical position, as in Fig. 2, the closure 4 enters the end of the case 2 and is adapted to be secured therein by a lock" 10. The case 2 is recessed at 13 to receive the ends of the lined portion 9 of the end closure. The case 2 is also mounted on tracks 11, inserted in the bed and'eng'aging grooves in the bottom of the front and rear walls of the case 2.
To secure the case upon these tracks,,strip s 6 are secured to the bed 1 by screws 7 inserted in vertical slots in said strips, whereby the same may be'vertically adjusted, and in the inner sidesof these strips are inserted hold-; -1ngbars 12-, which shdably engage horizontal grooves in the case 2, and thus hold the case dowiiupon the tracks. Byad usting the strips {3 these bars can be ad ust-ed to slide freely in the grooves. To further secure the case when closed, hooks 1-6 are attached to the bed-plate 1 and engage openings 1'. in the i s v end wall of the case whentl e same is closed.
To prevent sliding the case back when closed, hooks 1.4 are mounted on the fixed part 9 of the end-closures and detach'al'ily engage lugs Thus when the end closure 4 is secured by the lock 10 the device cannot be opened without unlocking the same, even though the side strips 6 beftaken oil.
To stop the case in proper position for various sizes of. machines, a series of holes 19 is i made on'the inner side of" the case, in one of which holes a pin 18 is inserted, which when the case is opened engages the rear of the hooklo and stops the use in position according to the hole in which the pin is inserted.
The operation of my device, it will be noted, does not require the moving of the machine into position for use. It will also be noted that the top 3 of the case is conveniently located to support books or other articles for use in conjunction with the machine when the same is opened and serve the further purpose of a part of the inclosing mechanism when closed.
It is obvious that this device is not limited in its capacity to use with an adding-machine. It would also serve quite satisfactorily for type-writers or other analogous machines.
What I claim is l. The combination of a horizontal bed,-a case slidable thereon and open at one end, and a closure su ported upon the bed and adapted to clos t eopen end of the case.
2. The combination of a bed, a case movable on the bed and open at one end, a closure for said open end having a lower portion fixed on the bed and an upper portion hinged thereto to turn to a horizontal position, and to turn to a vertical position to close the end of the case.
The combination of a bed, a case movable on the bed and open at one end. and also having ar: inclined top surface for a booksupport, a closure to close the open end of the case and hinged at the bottom to turn to a horizontal position, and means for support-- ing thesame in said position.
4. The combination of a,bed, tracks on the bed, a case open at one end and at the bottom, and slidably mounted on said track, an end closure having a lower portion fixed on the bed, brackets attached to said lower portion and an upper portion ,to said closure hinged to the lower portion and supported by the brackets.
5. The combination of a horizontal bed to support an adding-machine, a case open at one end and at the bottom and slidable on said bed, said case also having an inclined top arranged in close relation to the top of said machine and adapted to cover the same when closed, a closure for the open end of the case having a fixed lower portion and a hinged upper portion, brackets on the lower part of the closure to support the upper portion of the same, hooks on the fixed portion, lugs in the case engaged by said hooks, hooks on the bed to engage recesses in the case, and a lock to secure the u per portion of the closure.
6. The com ination of a horizontal bed, tracks on the bed, strips attached to the sides of the bed, holding-bars in the strips, a case mounted on the tracks and having grooves engaged by the bars, said case also bein open at the bottom and at one end, an end closure to the case and attached to the bed, hooks on the end closure engaging lugs on the case, and hooks on the bed engaging recesses in the case, a hinged upper portion to the closure and a lock to secure said portion.
7. The combination of a bed to sup )ort a machine, a case slidable on the bed an open at the bottom and at one end, a closure for the open end of the case and having a fixed lower portion attached to the bed and a hinged upper portion, a hook on the bed engaging a recess in the end of the case, a pin inserted in the case to engage the hook, a hook on the closure, a lug on the case and engaged by the hook and a lock to secure the hinged portion of the end closure to the case.
In testimony whereof I alfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUSTIN TIENDRICKS.
