PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD J. COLVIN, OF BRISTER, ARKANSAS.
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 777,005, dated December 6, 1904:.
Application filed July 26, 1904. Serial No. 218,224. (No model.)
To (til whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. CoLvm, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brister, in the county of Columbia and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
As is well known, in agricultural districts it is customary in driving plows to provide the plow-line with a loop to receive the wrist of the operator of the implement, so that the handle of the plow may be firmly grasped by the hands. In many instances the plow-lines used are of rope, and in adjusting the loop the knotted portion of the rope is very disadvantageous because of the difliculty of untying the same after it has become wet or otherwise affected by the elements.
The preferred purpose of my invention therefore is to provide a buckle or tie especially adapted for use upon plow lines for purposes above premised upon, though susceptible of various other adaptations, as a connection for adjusting ropes, cables, straps, and the like.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings.
'While the essential and characteristic features of the invention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the practical application of my invention when used upon plow-lines. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the buckle or tie alone. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the buckle.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
For the purposes of the descriptionl will describe my buckle or tie as comprising a plate formed of sheet metalsuch as iron, brass, or the like-and consisting, essentially, of two members-namely, an attaching member 1 and an engaging member 2. The members 1 and 2 of the buckle are of integral formation and are disposed in approximately the same relative plane. The attaching member 1 is provided with an approximately circular opening 3, and the engaging member is of somewhat similar formation, being provided with an opening 4 transversely widened for purposes which will appear more fully hereinafter. The engaging member 2 is somewhat larger than the attaching member 1, and the opening 4 thereof is curved upon its inner portion and straight upon its outer portion, being of somewhat semicircular form. The end of the engaging member 2 remote from the attaching member is cutaway on a straight line approximately, and a cross-bar 5 is thus formed. Projected upwardly from the crossbar 5 adjacent the opening 4 are a plurality of teeth 6, which extend transversely of the opening, and similar teeth 7 project downwardly from the under side of the engaging member, being situated adjacent the curved portion of the opening 4: therein.
When the buckle or tie is used for plowlines in the preferred contemplation of the invention, the end of the line 8 is suitably attached to the attaching member 1 and may be secured to this member by means of a wire 9 passed through apertures 9 on the outermost portion of the same. The line 8 is looped through the opening 3 of the attaching memher and thence upwardly through the opening 4 of the engaging member 2, passing around the cross-bar 5 and from thence to the bridle of the animal harnessed to the plow. It will be seen that the provision of the teeth 6 and 7 of the engaging member facilitates the binding or clamping action of this member against the rope or line 8 and prevents slipping of this line after same has been once adjusted to provide the end loop which receives the hand of the operator of the implement. The manner of connecting and passing the line 8 through the buckle or tie is such as to readily admit of adjustment of the same Without the diiiiculty experienced when the plow-line is knotted or otherwise secured.
The buckle is exceedingly simple and can the curved peripheral portion of the opening 1 therein, other teeth projected upwardly from the plate at the straight portion of the opening 4: aforesaid and the wire 9 having its ends secured to the plate adjacent the opening 3 and forming an attaching-loop.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in 20 presence of two witnesses.
