PATENT OEEICE.
`CARTRIDGE-BELT OR BAN DOLEER.
SPECIFICATION `formingpart of Letters Patent N0. 776,193, dated November 29, 1904.
l Application filed March Z8, 1904. Serial No. 200,459. (No model.) I
To all whom, t may concern.:
Beit known that I, ANSON MILLS, brigadiergeneral United States Army, retired, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Washington city, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cartridge-Belts or Bandoleers, of which the following is a specification.
In my Patent No. 722,124, of March 3, 1903, I have described and claimed an ammunitioncarrier consisting of woven fabric having two groups of vpockets integral therewith lof cated on opposite faces and opening at opposite edges of the fabric.
My present improvement embodies the same general idea as that set forth in my said Letters Patent, but modified so as to adapt itto the i 'embodying the invention.
Figure lis a plan View of a bandoleer made in accordance with my invention, the sides of the pockets on the right-hand side being drawn together by a cord, while the pockets on the opposite side are open and the cord omitted from the eyelets. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of two of the pockets forming part of the bandoleer embodying my invention. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section throughtwo of the pockets, one on each face of the center ply or body fabric of the belt.
A is the bandoleer, made preferably of a three-ply woven fabric, the center ply B of which constitutes,i n effect, a pliable band upon opposite faces of which the cartridge-receiving pockets a b are located, the pockets a; on one face of the band opening at one edge of the band and the pockets Z) on the opposite face of the band opening at the opposite edge of the band, as shown. Each pocket is of a size to receive and hold a clip or group C of cartridges (live in number in this instance) and has at its bottom individual thimbles a' or b', which extend high enough to receive only the bottle-neck of the cartridge. These thimbles can be readily woven by proper manipulation of the binder-warps which enter into the composition of the multiply fabric, as will be understood by reference to my pat! ent above named.
The pockets are preferably of sufiicient depth to extend beyond the heads of the clips or groups which they contain, so that the sides of a pocket, at the mouth end thereof, can be drawn together and over the clip, thus covering and. holding the same'. A convenient means for thus drawing together the sides of the pocket over the clip is a cord or string c, which is passed through eyelet-holes 0l in the sides of the pocket at the mouth end and then drawn and tied in a bow-knot, so as to pull the fabric over the head of the clip and keep it in this position, thus holding the clip securely in place. tucked under one of the iiaps, so as to be out the way, and all that is necessary is to pull on one of the ends of the cord, the effect of which will be first to untie the bow-knot and then to withdraw the cord from the eyelets, thus permitting the clip to be removed from its pocket. I'make the clips proper with rounded corners or edges, so that the fabric which is drawn over the same will not be frayed or cut.
It will be understood that any suitable provision for closingthe mouths of the pockets or retaining the clips or groups therein may be employed in lieu of the cord and eyelets.
What I claim herein as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A multiply-fabric cartridge-belt or bandoleer having, integral with the body of the belt, pockets of a size to accommodate a clip or group of cartridges, and thimbles within each pocket, at or near the closed end thereof, to receive the bullet ends of the individual cartridges of the group or clip contained in the pocket, substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth. v
