Be it known that I, ALPHEUs FIELDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gilmerton, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have rnadecertain new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in bedsteads, and relates particularly to a novel construction of head and back rest adapted Vfor adjustment to support a person in bed at any desired inclination; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a bed with theback-rest shownin full lines adjusted to form a part of the head-frame of the bed and in dotted lines to serve as a back-rest. Figs. 2 and 3 are detail perspective views showing, respectively, portions of one of the head-posts of the bed and the base-rail of the rest-frame. Fig. 4 is a detail elevation of the inner side of one of the head portions of the bed. Fig. 5 is a detail elevation showing' one of the headposts of the bed and a portion of the restframe, a part of the latter being shown in section; and Fig. 6 is a detail side elevation of the head portion of a bedstead, illustrating the rack on one of the side rods of the bed.

In carrying out my invention I provide for adjusting the inclination of the rest-frame both by shifting the connection of the upper end thereof with the head-frame of the bed and by elongating or extending the said restframe, so its lower .end may extend farther from the headboard to any desired extent. To this end I provide the head-frame of the bed with a series of seats A, arranged on the inner sides of the head-posts B and forming supports and bearings for the extended ends of the upper cross-bar C of the rest-frame D. This cross-bar C is adapted at its ends C to be supported in any suitable pair of opposite seats A, the latter being preferably in the form of curved lugs projecting inwardly from the posts B, as best shown in Figs. l and s of the drawings. D is composed of an upper section D and a The extensible rest-framel section D2, as shown in Figs. l and 5 of the drawings. Near their loweropen ends the tubes E are connected by the intermediate bars E, (see Figs. 1 and 5,) which connectingbars E operate to brace the tubes E the desired distance'apart and also hold vsaid tubes E rigidly together adjacent to their open ends, and clamping-screws G (see Figs. l and 5) turn through the outer tubes E and bear against the rods F therein and serve to secure the lower section D2 of the extensible frame in any desired adjustment. The lower cross-bar F of the section D2 of the extensible frame extends at its ends at F' and is provided at the extremity of such extensions with lugsf, which lit in sockets 7) on the head-posts B when the frame D is adjusted to form a part of the headframe of the bed, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings.

In use the lower cross-bar F mayrest upon the mattress, as indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 1, or, if desired, the said cross-bar F may engage by its end lugs f with rack-bars H/ on the side bars H of the bed, as best shown in Fig. 6 yof the drawings.

In operation the top bar C may be adjusted into any desired one of theseats A on the headposts B and the frame D can be adjusted longitudinally in order to secure any desired angle and to secure any desired arrangement of the lower end of the rest-frame relatively to the head-frame of the bed.

The invention is especially adapted for use in connection with and to form a part of an iron or other metal bedstead, as will be understood from Fig. 1, and can also be applied to wooden or other bedsteads, as may be desired.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isA

1. The combination substantially as herein described, of the head-frame, having its posts IOO provided on their inner sides with the series of seats for the top bar of the rest-frame. the rest-frame composed of upper and lower sections tclescopically connected, the upper section having a top bar extended at its ends to engage in the seats of the head-posts, tubes extended from said top bar and open at their lower ends, bars connecting such tubes near their open ends and clamping-screws turning through certain of said tubes to engage with the rods of the lower section.l and the said lower section havingI a cross-bar at its lower end, and rods projecting therefrom to enter the tubes of the upper section, such cross-rod of the lower section having its extended ends provided with lugs, the side rods of the bed' having racks for engagement by said lugs, and the socket-pieces on the head-posts to receive said lugs when the rest-frame is adjusted to form a part of the head-frame, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination with the head-frame ot a bed, of an extensible rest-frame composed of sections telescopically connected, means for securing' said sections in any desired adjustment, and means whereby the upper end of the rest-frame may be supported at different points in connection with the head-frame, substantially as set forth.

3. rlhe combination of the head-frame, thel side rods, the rest-frame composed of an upper section and a lower section telescopically connected with the upper section, means for securing` the lower end of the lower section in diiierent adjustments relatively to the side rods, and means for securing the upper end of the upper section in different adjustments in connection with the head-frame of the bed, substantially as set forth.

4. The rest-frame for bedsteads herein described, consisting' of an upper section, having' an end cross-bar extended at its ends for connection with the head-frame of the bed, and the tubes extended therefrom and connections between said tubes near their open ends, and the lower section havingI a crossbar and rods projecting therefrom and entering` the tubes of the upper section, and clamping-screws for securing the sections in different adjustments, substantially as set forth.

5. The combination of the head-frame having its posts provided with the series of seats, the extensible rest-frame having an upper section provided with a cross-bar and with portions to tit in the seats of the head-frame, the lower section having a cross-bar and rods extending` therefrom and enteringI the tubes of the upper section, and means for securing said sections in any desired adjustment, substantially as set forth.

6. The combination of the head-frame, the side rods having' racks and the rest-frame composed of an upper section. and a lower section telescopically connected with the upper section and provided at its lower end with means for engagement with the racks of the side bars, and means for securing; the upper end of the upper section in different adjustments in connection with the head-frame of the bed, substantially as set forth.

7 An extensible rest-frame for bedsteads, composed of two sections each having` at one end a cross-bar and parallel portions projecting therefrom, and telescoping' with the mating portions projecting from the cross-bar of the other section, and means for securing the frame in any desired adjustment.
