PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED W. BENSKIN, OF MAUMEE, OHIO.
TRY-SQUARE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 772,861, dated October 18, 1904.
' Application filed December 15, 1903. Serial No. 185,308. (No model.)
I To (LZZ 'LUh/OWI/ it may cpncern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED W. BENSKIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Maumee, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Try-Squares; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which. it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my in vention as applied to a block of wood, shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of my invention with face-plate removed, the bevel-blade being shown as adjusted outwardly in full lines and inwardly in dotted lines.
The invention relates to try-squ ares; and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth. I In the accompanying drawings. illustrating the invention, the letter a designates a trysquare having the handle portion band the blade 0 rigidly attached to said handle por-,
tion, said blade having its inner upper corner (Z a little above the end of the handle portion, as shown.
Between the longitudinal face of the handle portion and a face-plate e, offset therefrom and extending over the same, is provided a recessslotf, in which is located the adjustable bevelblade g, lying in and adjustable in a plane at right angles to that of the square, this blade being pivoted to the handle portion of the square by means of a set-screw h, passing through a curved slot is of the bevel-blade,
. which has-a plane of movement at right angles to the plane of the square.
The upper corner m of the bevel-blade or plate g is alined in its different adjustments with the'up'per edge 0 of the try-square blade 0, this bevel-blade 9 having its arcuate slot is taken from such corner m as a center. The
set-screw 72, provides means for fixing the adjustm ent of such bevel-blade. The lower end of the bevel-blade is cut a an angle of forty-five degrees, and when the blade is in its recess-seatf its bevel end abuts against a bevel foot-lug s between the faceplate and handle, said foot lug having a similar angular edge deslgned to engage the bevel end of the bevel-blade and hold it in position at right angles to the edge of the try-square blade 0.
The instrument is simple in construction and is designed to provide an accurate guide for marking bevels on squared timber and for other similar purposes.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, 1s
. 1. The combination with a try-square, of a bevel-blade lying in and adjustable in aplane at right angles to that of the square and having an arcuate slot taken from the upper corner of the try-square as a center, and having its inner upper corner alined with the upper edge of the try-square, and a set-screw en' gaging said arcuate slot for fixing the adjustmentof said bevel-blade,substantially as specified.
2. The combination with a try-square having an offset face-plate having a bevel footlug, of a bevel-blade lying in and adjustable in a plane at right angles to that of the square and having a bevel lower end, and provided with an arcuate slot taken from the upper inner corner of said try-square as a center,
said bevel-blade'having its inner upper corner alined with the upper edge of the try-square,
and a set-screw for fixing the adjustment of said bevel-blade, substantially as specified.
3'. The combination with a try-squareof an adjustable bevel-blade lying in and adjustable in a plane at right angles to that of the square and terminating, and having its inner upper corner alined, with the upperedge of the trysquare, and means for fixing the adjustment of said bevel-blade, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of twowitnesses.
ALFRED W. BENSKIN.
