JOSEF PEACH, OF TRAVERSE CITY, MICHIGAN.
IVIITER-BOX- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 26, 1907.
Application filed December 13. 1905- Serial No. 291,551.
To all whom, it ntay concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEF PEACH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Traverse City, in the county of Grand Traverse and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Miter-Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to wood-sawing, and its object is to provide a new and im roved miter-box arranged to permit of cutting the wood or other material at any desired angle and without changing the position of the saw in the saw-guides.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described herein after and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a' sectional side elevation of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is an inverted plan view of part of the 11nprovement. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the work-guides and the irpivotal connection with the base.
On a suitably-constructed base A is arranged a ivot-pin B, on which is mounted to turn a p atform O, carrying saw-guides D,
between which the saw is inserted for cutting the wood or other material at a desired angle. The platform 0 is normally held against turning by the use of a screwE, extending through a lug A, rising from the base A, the screw engaging a lug O depending from. the under side of the platform O. Thus when the screw E is in position, as shown in Fig. 3, the platform O is held against turning; but when the screw E is unscrewed then the platform C may be turned, if desired. On the pivot B are also mounted to swing work-guides F and F in radial alinement wlth the pivot B and extending on opposite sides of the saw-blade in the saw-guide D, which latter also is radial relative to the pivot B, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 2. Each of the work-guides F and F is provided with a foot F adapted to travel on the upper surface of the base A, and each foot F is adapted to abut against the free end of a stop G, preferably in the form of a spring-tongue secured to the base A within a recess formed in the top of the said base. The stops G are placed in such position on the base Athat when afoot F abuts against the free end of the stop then the corresponding work-guide F or F is held at an angle to the saw-blade, preferably at an angle of either forty-five degrees or ninety degrees, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 2. The work-guides F F are slotted to receive the platform O and are connected by arms F F with rings F F, j ournaled on the pivot-pin B. The work-guides F and F are pivotally connected by links H and H with a slide I, mounted to slide in suitable guideways J, formed on the under side of the base A and arranged radially relative to the pivot B and lengthwise of the saw held in the saw-guide D. The links H and H extend through elongated slots A formed in the base A, and the said links are bent to extend with their forward ends above the base A and then pass downward through the slots A to connect with the slide I. On the latter is'secured a rod I, passing through one end of the base A and carrying at its outer terminal a knob I adapted to be taken hold of by the operator for pushing the slide I inward or outward with a view to swing the work-guides F and F forwardly or back- Wardly until the work-guides assume the desired position according to the miter to be cut on the stick of wood or other material to be mitered.
It is understood that the work is placed against one of the work-guides F or F to out either a right or left hand miter by the use of the saw guided in the saw-guides D, it being also understood that the two work guides F and F move simultaneously on shifting the slide I and assume the same an gle relative to the saw in the saw-guides D, but on opposite sides thereof. After the slide I has been moved to the desired position with a view to bring the work-guides F and F to the correct position then the slide I, and consequently the work-guides F and F, are locked in place by the use of a set-screw K, screwing in'a nut A arranged on the under side of the base A, the inner terminal of the set-screw K abutting against the rod I of the slide I. (See Fig. 4.) The forward end of the saw held in the sawguides D also passes through supplementary or auxiliary guides L, arranged on the front end of the base A.
As illustrated in the drawings, the saw guides D are formed of two base-plates D,
provided with transversely-elongated slots D through which extend screws D screwing in the platform C to allow of adjusting the saw-guides D toward and from each other according to the thickness of the saw used in the miter-box. From each base D rises a support D, having its inner face beveled for receiving a correspondingly-shaped guiding member D adapted to be moved nearer to or farther from the center of the pivot B. Each guide member D is adapted to be fastened in position on its support by a screw 1), passing through a lengthwise-elongated slot D formed in the corresponding support D, so that after a guide member D is moved in the desired position then it can be fastened in place on the corresponding support D by screwing up the screw D.
Each of the work guides F and F is provided with an adjustable member F engagedby a set-screw F, extending through an elongated slot F formed in a verticallydisposed support F rising integrally from the base F of the work-guide F or F. On loosening the set-screws F* the members F of the work-guides F and F can be adjusted inward or outward relative to the center of the pivot B and when in an outermost position allow of passing the work across the platform 0 between the saw-guides and the workguides, and hence the operator can now out inside miters or corners.
In using the device the saw is placed in position in the guides D and L and the knob I is moved inward or outward, so as to swing the work-guides F and F simultaneously in the desired position, and then the work is placed against the member F of the corresponding work-guide F or F, after-which the saw is used to cut the work with a view to produce the desired miter.
The miter-box shown and described is very simple and durable in construction and is arranged to allow of cutting accurately right and left hand miters at one adjustment and without requiring changing the position of the saw in the saw-guides D. When the position of the saw-guides is changed, the saw is removed from the guides L, said guides being only used when the saw-guides are in parallelism therewith.
Having thus described my invention, 1
ually-controlled means for imparting a swinging movement to the said work-guides to simultaneously set the same alike relative to and on opposite sides of the saw-guide, the saw-guide and the Work-guides being provided with radially-adjustable plates, Whereby to permit the insertion of different sizes of work.
2. A miter-box, comprismg a saw-guide, work-guides mounted to swing from a center from which radiates the saw-guide, each work-guidev having a radially-adjustable plate, and manually-controlled means for imparting a swinging movement to the said work-guides to simultaneously set the same alike relative to and on opposite sides of the saw-guide.
3. A miter-box, comprising a saw-guide mounted to. swing, means for normally holding the saw-guide against swinging movement, work-guides mounted to swing from a center from which radiates the saw-guide, and manually-controlled means for imparting a swinging movement to the said workguides to simultaneously set the same alike reladtive to and on opposite sides of the sawgui e.
4. A miter-box, comprising a base, a sawguide mounted on the said base, work-guides mounted to swing on the said base, a slide mounted to slide on the said base in the direction of the length of the said saw-guide, links connecting the said work-guides with the said slide, and means under the control of the o erator for imparting movement to the said s ide, said saw-guide and work-guides being provided with radially-adjustable )lates whereby to permit the insertion of di 'erent sizes of work.
5. A miter-box, comprising a base, a sawguide mounted to turn on the said base, work-guides mounted to swing on the said base, a slide mounted to slide on the said base in the direction of the length of the said sawguide, links connecting the sa1d work-guides with the said slide, means under the control of the operator for imparting movement to the said slide, and means on the said base for holding the said saw-guide normally against turning.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEF PEACH.
