To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Jiisrnn L. PURPLE, of Owego, in the county of Tioga and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Saw, of which the following is a full,

I clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved saw which is so constructed that it can also be used as a square, plunib, bevel, 820.

The invention consists in a saw having a longitudinal slot at right angles to the straight inner edge of the handle, through which slot a set screw passes, which can be adapted to any desired angle, one edge of the slot being provided with a graduated angle-scale, while the lower inner corner edge of the handle is adapted to serve as a rest for a straight-edge, rule, or analogous instrument.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawingsiorining part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure l is a side view of the handle end of my improved saw, parts being broken out. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.

The saw-bla le A is secured at its butt-end to a handle, B, in the usual manner. This handle is provided on its inner end with a straight'edge, which is at right angles to the back edge of the saw, or to a longitudinal slot, G, with the said back edge. A screw, D, is held in that corner of the handle toward the cutting-edge, and a recess, E, is formed on the upper inner corner, and into the said recess the end of the slot passes. The recess E is of such depth that the head of a screw, F, can be held entirely within the recess,so that the said head does not project be yond the inner straight-edge of the saw-handle. The screw F passes through the slot 0, and is adapted to be moved in the same in the direction of the slot. Along the inner edges of the slot 0 lines arecut, etched, or otherwise produced,which indicate the inclination from zero to forty-five degrees. In the inner edge of the saw-handle a glass level-tube, G, is held. As shown in Fig. 1, the inner edge of the handle B is adjusted at right angles to the slot 0. If a different angle is desired, the screw l is moved more or less in the direction of the arrow a, and a straight-edge, rule, &c., placed against the heads of the screws 1) and F have the desired inclination, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. If the saw is placed with its back against an upright, it can be used as a pluinb, and it" held in a horizontal position it can be used as a level.

Having thus described n1 y invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with a saw with its blade provided with a straight longitudinal slot, along one edge of which are arranged anglegraduations,oftl1e set-screw adjustable in said 5- slot, and adapted to serve, together with the lower inner corner edge of the handle, as a rest for a straight-edge, rule, or analogous instruinent, substantially as set forth.
