PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCISCO. CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES C. DEAN, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
COMBINATION CUFF AND WRISTBAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 771,730, dated October l, 1904,
Application filed March 4, 1904.
To all whom/it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM EDWIN How- ELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in. the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented. a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Wristband and Cuff, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to a combination wristband and cuff, and more particularly to certain improvements upon the combination wristband and cuff patented to me February 19, 1889, No. 397 ,920. In that construction the outside lap of the slit portion of the sleeve was provided with an opening or notch in order to permit the ready buttoning of the wristband when the combination device was used as a wristband. This cut-out portion is objectionable for the reason that in laundering the shirt the said part is quickly and easily torn, thereby rendering that portion of the shirt useless; and the object of this present invention is to remedy this defeet; and with this object in View the invention consists, essentially, of the employment of a gussetwhich is inserted between the end of the outside lap and the combined wristband and cuff.
The invention consists also in certaindetails hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved construction, the combination device being arranged to show the wristband. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the parts being arranged to show the cuff. Fig. 3 is an interior perspective view showing the position of the parts when the combination device is arranged as a cuff. Fig. i is an enlarged detail perspective view, and Fig. 5 is a plan view, of the gusset.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates an ordinary sleeve, and B the combination wrist- -.ndBand cuff connected thereto upon the C indicates the inside of the slit formed at e end of the sleeve, and D the outside lap,
Serial No. 196,601. (No model.)
and it will be noted that the end of the lap C is cut off, as shown at C. and it will also be noted 5 that the lap D is cut off as shown at D, the lap D being cut off upon the long obliqueline, and between the cut-off end of the lap and the line of stitching B is arranged a gusset E, which bulges outwardly, as shown at E, so as to 55 leave abundant space for the manipulation of the button which passes through the buttonhole B It will be noted that the bu ttonholes are arranged adjacent the top and bottom of the combination wristband and cuff, so that 60 when the said part is used one of the buttonholes B will be brought adjacent the gusset E, and as this gusset is made of thin material it is obvious the fastening and unfastening can be quickly and easily accomplished.
The extreme end of the gusset is left unattached, as shown at E in order to render the manipulation of the device easier. The end of the lap C is cut off, as shown at C, for exactly the same purpose.
It is obvious from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, that by reversing the combination cuff and wristband the said parts can be used as a wristband or a cuff, as most clearly 7 5 shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v The combination with a cuff, of a longitu- 8O dinally-slotted sleeve having its ends secured to the outer face of the cuff intermediate the ends of the cuff, one of the marginal portions of the sleeve along the slot being adapted to overlap the opposite marginal portion, the 5 overlapping portion being cut away obliquely adjacent the end of the sleeve, and a full gusset secured along one edge to the sleeve on the line of the oblique cut, and having the adjacent edge seeured to the cuff, as and for the 9 purpose set forth.
\VILLIAM EDlVIN HOWVELL.
