IMPROVED DIES POR `liIAKING'r THIMBLES AND FBRRULES.

@Die rlgtmle refcmt tu in time iztttt nteni mit mating mi mf ille time,
KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE-PRESENTS:
That I, J.v H. COLE, of Milbury, county of Worcester, und Oommcnweitlth of Massachusetts, have invented u Die and Plunger for Making Fei-rules or Thimbles of cold wrought iron, which I believe has never before been done, to be used on drawing-knife or shave-handles, or for such other purposes as'they may be applied.
By this improvement I am enabled to make ferrules of cold wrought iron much cheaper, more perfect, and much faster than itl can be clone by heating the iron, thereby saving expense of coal and much labor, and also making less imperfect ones.
This processof making ferrules of cold wrought iron has long been sought, but Without success until now. It is only by this peculiar formation of the die and plunger that the desired result can be reached. The die und plunger must be made so as .to conform to :tud give a gradual bearing und stretch to the iron, as it is carried or forced down the die, or it will crack or-curl before receiving its proper form. 4 v
The peculiar formation of this die and plunger is such that theferrule or thimble is formed by one impres=` sion or stroke-of the press, andas fast as anyone can placethe disk of iron on the die; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification; and to enable those 4skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it. In the dra-iiYing---v l Figure 1 represents a. perspective view of a die and plunger-for making fer-rules or thimbles-A the die, nn'dB the plunger. v
`Figure 2 represents a sectional view of the die A and plunger B, the die A with a groove at the top to receive the disk of iron, from which groove commences 'the line of curvatures, increasing in degree'to correspond with thestretch ofthe disk of iron, as the plunger B, with its co-acting surfaces, takes it to its final form.
G represents a. perspective View of a. ferrule or'thinlble, as' formed by the co-acting surfaces of the die and ,plunger A and B.
Having described my die, plunger, and ferrule, I claim v J Jointly, the" die and Vplunger A and B, the cci-acting surfaces of which have the configuration herein ,f described and show-n, for the manufacture of ferrules vnnd'thimbles from disks of cold wrought iron, in the manner hereinbefore set forth. i
Worcester, September 20, A. D. 1867.
