Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEe IMPROVEMENT IN DIES FOR NUT-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,780, dated April 1Q, 1866.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORRIN C. BURDICT, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and Sta-tc ot' Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dies for Nut-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying; drawing and the letters ot' reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description v`of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this'speoication, and represents., in l Iigure l, a face view.
My invention relates to ali' improvement in the construction of hexagonal dies for inachines for makin g hot-pressed nuts; and it consists iu construct-ing,` the die from six pieces, arranged so that each of the six pieces forms one of the six sides'of the die and so that the position of either of the parts .may be changed for that of another.
To enable others ski lled. iu the art to construct and use my improvement, I will. proceed to fully describe thel same as illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
I construct the several parts of a thickness so that when the endis cut-at theA angle of sixty degrees the length ot the-angular side will be equal to one ofthe sides ofthe nut required to be made, and the `several ,pieces of the width required for the depth of the dies. I form the same angle upon each end ot' theseveral pieces and place. the six pieces 1'2- 3,4 5 6 in a die-holder, A, the pieces l and 4 forming' two opposite sides, the pieces 2 and 3 two other opposite sides, and the pieces 5 and 6 the other twoopp'osite sides. Thus placed in the dieholder they are secured therein by means ot' set-screws B.
Vhen, by useor otherwise, either one of the six parts has become worn or broken, it may be changed for one in another position, as 5 for 6 or for either ofthe others, or it may be turned over, changing,` the inside edge for the outside, which will carry 5 to the position of 3, and 3 to the position of 5, or it may be turned end for end. Thus each separate piece would permit of four changes, and the die thus constructedis much more simple and less costly than the ordinary solid die, and the cost ot' removing the die when all the changes admissible shall have been made is much less, as it is only necessary to re-form the ends of each piece to produce another die having,` the saine changes.
Having therefore thus fully described my improvement, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A hexagonal die constructed in the manner substantially as herein set forth.
ORRIN C. BURDIGT.
