Description

@garten tat-ea garant @ffice F. A. RICH AND H; W. vsassari, or WALLINGFORD;CONNECTICUT, assis-N.`
ORS TO HALL, ELTON, AND COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 79,004, dated June 16, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN DIES ron CUTTING sroo'N-BLANKS.
To ALL WHOM IrMAY'coNoERN:
Be it known that we, F. A. RICH and H. W. BASSETT, of Wallingford, inftlie county ofNew Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a newv Improvement in Dies for Blauking Spoons; and we do hereby declare thefollowing, when taken inconnectionfwith the accompanying drawings, andthe letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exactd'escription of the same, and which said drawingsconstitute part of this specification, and represent, in- V i Figure 1, a perspective view of the die,
Figure 2 a perspective view of 'the punch inverted, and in Figure 3, diagram showing the plan oftblanking. Y l y A This invention relates toan improvement in cutting blanks for themanufacture of spoons. Heretofore, the blanks have been cut fremasheetmof metal, by placing vthe sheet under proper dies, so as to cut from one .edge only, then, reversing the metal, so as to present .the other edge. Othe blanks were cut in like manner,;
thus using nearly all the metal in the sheet, but a' separate operation is required for cach individual blank. By our improvement, after the first blank is cut, every succeeding operation cuts two blanks, employing but a single die, and 'our invention, by which this is accomplished, consists in providing the die-or punch with acutter, in such relative 4position to the'die that the said cutter will divide the blanks -upon.cnezedge, while the die proper cuts a lseries of blanks fromr'the'other edge, theblanks upon the opposite edge being formed by the space between Vthe blanks upon the edgewhere the-llieeperates. v i
v ,To enable others to construct our'imprlovement, we will proceed to describe the same 'as illustrated in the accompanying drawings. l v, p e' l a A is adie-holdcr, constructed solas t'o. receivean-d securely hold the die-plate B. Through the said dieplate B the die C is formed, offthe shape reqniredtforthe' spoon-blank, and as denoted by broken lines at D, iig. 3, andpupon the die-platc,`n the properrelativeposition, (more fully hereafter shown,) .we form an edge, a.
-E is thc punch, constructed `to fit-the die C, and fixed toa plate, F, and upon the said plate F is fixed a cutter, G, adjusted so that when the. punch enters the die, the said cutter G will .pass down across the edge a on the die-plate, so that the sheet placed between the two will be operated :upon at the same time, both by. the punch and cutter G. l i
The punch and die'are arranged in a common punching-press, so as to operate in the usual manner.
The form of the die, as denoted at D, tlg. 3,-issuch that one blank, formed by the dicrwhen reversed, corresponds, the one side to the `other, as denoted in iig. 3, `so that while the die forms the blank it at the same time forms one side of a blank, ligand-the opposite side of a. blank, I, but `in Vso forming the blank, D,.and the two sides H and I, it leaves the pbint J still connected; that is tofsay, the blanks upon the side D are .entirely detached by the die, while `those upon the'opposite side are joined at J.y l
Having passed the sheet between the die, and punched therefrom, so as to form the outer edge of the blank, K, the sheet is fed along until the die will strike the plate, and punch a blank from thc space L, thus forming the opposite side of the blank, K. VAgain fed along, theY dies strike fromV the sheet another blank, lD, and at the same time the cutter G separates the blank, K, by cutting through the shcetat M, and so continuing, each successive operation of the die striking a blank from one edge of the plate, and at the sume time the cutter G separating the second blank atV the opposite edge. Thus, by the arrangement of the` cutter Gr, twice as much work is'performed as by the machinery heretofore in use,'and no Waste of metal.
We make the cutter G adjustable, for the reason that constant use requires the' cutter to be sharpencd,'and in that case rcadjustment is necessary. v i
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claimV as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is` i e The arrangement of the cutter G on the one part, and the corresponding edge a on the other part, and combined withV the die C vand punch E, and in such relativeposition thereto thatl the whole will operate in the manner substantially as set forth. i l
l F. A. RICH,
H..W. BASSETT.
