`IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES POR BORING HUBS.

T0 ALL WHOM AIT MAY GONCERN@ A Be it known that LiIonN W. WALTERS, of Rieeville, in the county of Mitchell, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and improvedR-eaming-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is afullhclearr,-
and lexact description thereof, whichwill enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved roaming-machine. It consists of a cutting-tool, having a thread on its shank, setting into a box in which is a vertical-toothed or mitre-wheel, having an inside threadpcorrespond ing with thatpon the shank of the cutting-tool.
A crown or mitre-gear, solidly secured to the vbottom of a hollow shaft or sleeve, sui-mounted by a lhandwheel, operates the inside-'threaded gear-wheel, for the purpose of adjusting the cutting-tool asdesired. Af
rod, securely attached to the bottom of the box in which the cutting-tool is carried, screws into a clamp, while the upper clamp slides looselyon'the hollow shatter sleeve, and another rod securely attached to top of said box, passes through said sleeve, and is operated by a handleconnected to and released from th'ehand-wheel, by a suitable device, as desired. In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improved reamer, and 5 Figure 2 is a view,.on a larger scale, of the crown-gear and its attachments.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Ais a threaded shaft, solidly attached to the metal boxvB. C is'the lower clamp; which is most conveniently made three-armed, having a -female thread, into which the shaft A works, and clamping the hub D by the set-screws c c. y 4
The cutting-tool E tits into the metal box B, and its shank is provided with a' thread, e, upon which works the verticaltoothed wheel F, 'or an equivalent'gear-wheel, within the box B. t
G, in the present instance, is a crown-gear wheel, which engages with the toothed wheel F, and carries the hollow shaft or\sleeve H; surmounted by the hand-wheel L'.
The shaft K, having attached to it, at the top, the handle L, is solidly secured to the topof the box B, and
passes' through the sleeve H, so thatth'e threaded shaft A,`boz Band shaft K, always operate together as one piece. l v
The upper clamp, C', slides loosely on the hollow shaftH, and is clamped to the hub by sct-screws c e.
The hand-wheell is provided with holes in its rim, into which sets tho pinl, to hold the handle L and its `attachments to the hand-wheel I, and its attachments, when desired; and the cutting-tool being adjusted, as presently mentioned, and the reamer attached and clamped to the hub, by turning the handle L, the reamer is operated, and the threaded shaft A screwed into thelower clamp C, the shaft H at the same time descending through the loose upper 'clamp C.' v j The pin Z, which is attached to the under side of the spring M, passes through the handle L, and hand-wheel I, and a bent lever, N, having its fulcrum in said handle L, at n, raises the pin Z out of thehand-wheehenabling the hand-wheel and its attachments to beta1-ned for the purpose of adjusting. the cutting-tool, while'the'lliandle L andits attachments reinain stationary, thus operating the toothed wheel Fupon the thread of the shank e,-
of the cutting-tool E, and projecting or retiring said cutting-tool, as desired.
The threaded shaft A should equal or slightly'exceed in 'length the distance 'from the bottom of the box v Btc the hand-wheel I..
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the two shafts A K,fthc latter having the crown-gear wheel G, tubular shaft H, box B, adjustable 4cutter E, having the pinion F, all operating as described for the purpose specified. VJOHN W. WALTERS. Witnesses:
DAVID WYLIE, F. FnLtows.
