IMnRovnn HEEL-CUTTER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and lmaldng part of the sama.
To all/'whom it may concern B it known than, J. H. BEAN, ofManeaa, in the county of Washington, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Heel-Cutters; and ,1I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to a mechanism for cutting out boot-heels, &c., and consists, mainly, in certain details of construction, which will be fully described hereinafter.

Toenable others skilled in the art to make and use my inventih, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A represents the bed-plate of the machine, which may be oval,'square, elongated, or any suitable form, and is designed to be fastened to any desired surface by screws, c.
Near one end of the plate A is a circular recess, or countersink, in which is inserted the circular block B, of woodf-with its upper surface flush, or nearly so, with "j that ofthe plate B. 1 i .j
b represents an upright or standard, which rises'from the plate A, and is rigidly attached to the same.
This standard may be constructed with a curved arm, b', as shown, or with one extending at la right angle from it. l
O represents a second arm, directly below and in line with the arm b.
Both arms, b and O, have circular apertures, through which passes the vertical shaft O1, which is attached to the frame D.
In connection with the shaft O, and between arms b' and C, is a spiral spring, c, for the purpose of raising the cutter after it has been depressed.
'The die-frame or holder Cz is made in the'form of a hollow square, on the under surface of two sides of which are bevelled flanges, c c', in which iit the correspondingly-bevelled edges of the die D, whichv is thereby rendered detachable at will, by simply raising a spring-bolt, d, which works in a projection, d, on the outer end of the frame O2, the end of the sliding die having a corresponding projection, dz, in which is auY aperture, which, when brought under the bolt (l, the latter immediately springs into it and holds it fast. When `thedie is required to be withdrawn, it is necessary to raise the bolt d, which is provided with the head d* for that purpose.
The frame C2 is also provided with the span or cross piece D', which is elevated sufiiciently above the same to'admit of the removal from above ofthe forms which are cut out by the dieand alsov to provide-suitable means for the attachment of the shaft O.
To the upper end of the shaft Ox is pivoted the swinging arm E, whose function is to remove the leather as it accumulates above the top of the 'ame D2.l
e is an arm, which projects at right angles om the arm b', and is provided withan orifice, through which passes one end of a bent and weighted lever, e', which is attached to a slide or catch, F, of the construction shown in g. 3.
f represents a projection, on the arm E, which, when the shaft Ol and arm E are depressed, slides down the 4the same from' clogging. ',[n the'mean time, when the shaft returns to its former position, the projection f enga-ges with the bevelled under surface of ,the catch F," raising the same, until the projection passes above it, when the bent and weighted lever o' causes the catch to resume its position.
G represents a lever, which is pivoted .at g to a vertical extension of the arm b', whosel function is to depress the shaftG, with its attachments, which it accomplishes by means of the connecting-rod or treadle H, the lower extremity of which is provided with the ring or sti'rrup h, and which passes througha hole in the arm h', the hole being somewhat enlarged to admit of thenecessary play of the treadle.

The object of this guide is to regulate the play of the lever G, thereby restricting the depth of stroke ofthe die.
The operation of the machine will be readily understood. v
