Imaam CARTRIDGE-Box.

TO ALL WHOM ITMAY CONC/EBN: l t
Be it known that I, JOHN ELBERTSON, of Kirksville, in the county-of Adair, and State of- Missouri, have yinvented a new and improvedGartridge-Box and I do hereby declare that .thev following is a full, clear, and
exact description of the construction and operation of 'thoisame', reference being had to the annexed drawings, makinga part of this specification, in which-` g My inventionis represented by a perspective View, a portion of the near wall of the box being. removed in order to show its interior. v l i In this invention the cartridges are arrangedin a circular disk, which is hung at its contre upon a spindle in a circular case. The latter is 4provided with a door at its lower edge, by which the cartridges are taken out. The disk carries. the percussion-caps also, which are taken out througha port in the upper side of the case. The disk and case are so constructed and arranged that the cartridges andcaps will always present themselves at the proper'placc to be handled.
In the drawings, A represents the circular case, having a door, B, on its front side, nea'r the lower edge, and another,.0, on its'rim,'at tbe top. This case forips -the body of the cartridge-box, being supported on the person ,bymeans ot a belt, which passes -undrand partially around it, through the eyes'or clasps a a. Inside of this casevis a circular disk, E, revolving freely ou a'pin orbolt, E', which passes through its centre, and "provided with lateral chambers or ,recesses e e, 'to hold the cartridges, and with split studs or nipples nn around its perimeter, to hold the percussion-caps, the object of the split in the nipples being 'to allow their side'to spread apart, and thus more securely conne tho caps, and prevent their falling c'. The inner walls of the case may be lined with a'nnel or other suitable substance, te protect the cartridges and 'caps fromaccidental firing. The walls of the disk may also be covered with tho same'niaterial, if thought necessary. The apertures B and C may be covered with a single ilap of leather,l or with any kind ofdoor that may be preferred. The case lmay be constructed of sheet metal, or of wood.
The operation of a cartridge-box thu's constructed will be as follows: s vsoon as a cartridgen isremoved, that side of the disk will become lighter than the other sides, and will rise to the top of the case, pres.enting the opposite edge of the. disk, full of cartridges, to the door B, so that when the soldier next handles his cartridges he will n'd them in theproper'position at thodoor of the casc, and ready for use. He will not, therefore, be-obligod to spend time in examining his cartridge-box to find the cartridges, but willl always place his thumb and fingers at one point in the box, and, so long'as there are cartridges left, will find them at that point.
Having thus described my invention, what I. claim as new, and desire to'secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The self-adjusting disk E, for holding the cartridges or caps, when used in combination with an enclosingf l case, substantially as andfor the purpose specied.
2. I claim the split nipples n n, having theirsides springing slightly apart, for the purpose of holding the caps, in the manner described. l n
To the above specification of my invention I have signed any hand, this 25th day of February, 1868.
'JOHN ELBERTSON,"
