Description

NO MODEL.
PATENTED SEPT. 13, 1904* G. F. COOPER.
TOE GLIP FOR BICYCLE PEDALS.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 22, 1902.
BY W ATTORNEYS UNrrnn STATES Patented September 13, 1904.
ATENT @rricn,
TOE-CLIP FOR BICYCLE-PEDALS- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,940, dated September 13, 1904.
Application filed April 22, 1902. Serial No. 104,175. (No model.)
To rI/Zl whom, it Hui/y concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES FREDERICK COOPER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of Leytonstone, county of Essex, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toe-Clips for Bicycle-Pedals, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to toe-clips for bicycle-pedals, the object thereof being to pro-' vide a device of this character which is adaptable for attachment to any common form of bicycle-pedal without the necessity of disassembling any of the pedal parts.
The device embodies a strap having a widened and tapering central part adaptable for engagement over the shoe of the rider and narrow extended ends for looping around the pedal, the ends being adapted and provided with means for adjustable attachment with each other, lateral displacement of the ends being prevented by means of flexible sliding rings and interlacing attachment of one end part with the body of the device.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved device; Fig. 2, an edge elevation thereof, and Fig. 3 an end elevation of a bicycle-pedal having the device attached thereto.
In the practice of my invention I provide, primarily, a strap A, embodying the widened and tapered central part (0, having the contracted and elongated ends a (4 The end a is folded over upon the body part a to form the loop 1 for engagement around the inner longitudinal part 2 of the pedal, as B, Fig. 3 of the drawings, and the end a is bent over on the body part a to form the loop 3 for engagement around the outer longitudinal part 4 of the pedal. To keep the loops 1 and 3 in normal relative arrangement with the pedal ends, expansible rings G, of rubber or other flexible material, are placed around the device above the loops, and by reason of the tapering contour of the body part of the device they are maintained in contact with the pedal ends to keep the device in normal position at right angles with the ends of the pedal. To further assist in keeping the parts in proper relative arrangement, the body part a is provided with slits (0 forming a sheath (0* for preventing lateral movement of the end a, and this said end is connected to the end a by means of the buckle D, which is attached to the end a of the device, thus providing an efiicient toe-clip for attachment to the pedal of any bicycle.
It will be seen that by this construction I do away with sewing on a piece of leather wider than the parts (b find a to take the place of the body part a, cheapen the price of production, produce a more durable clip than could be made by such sewing, and at the same time, by means of the slits a effectually prevent all lateral displacement of the parts a and a Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, a toe-clip for adjustable and detachable connection with the ends of a bicycle-pedal, comprising a strap embodying the integral relatively wide part a, to engage only one part of the upper side of the foot, and having the tapered extensions folded on themselves, and the slits a and sheath (0, and elongated narrow ends a and a and means for adjustably connecting said ends, and sliding rings for keeping the superposed parts together, said sheath employed to keep the strap ends in central position over the widened part of the strap and the tapered parts of the strap for preventing the rings from sliding upwardly, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 1st day of April, 1902.
CHARLES FREDERICK COOPER.
