Description
@eine 'fstes sfent @ffiny Wl-LLiAM H.- Baars, or 'BROOKLYN NEW YORK.
Letters Patent N0. 76,981, dated April 21, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IIN WINDOW-SASH LOCK.
To ALL nfHoM 1'1 MAX conceals;
Be ii; vknown that', WILLIAM HBETTS, of' Brooklyn, in Athe county of Kings, and State of' New York,
have invented, made, and applied toluse a certain. new and useful Improvement in Sash-Fastening'srand I do hereby declare'the' following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being y had to the annexed. drawing, making part of `this specification, wherein-'- Figure k1 is a plan of said sash-`astener,jasin place.
Figure 2 is a vertical section of the same, with the sushes fastened.
Figure 3 is a similwrvimv, withthe locking-piece drawn bak to allow the sashes to be moved.
Figure 4 is an elevation ofthe sash-fastener, looked.
Figure 5 is aview oftheloelcin'gpiece, Venduxise. of its slide; and- .Figure' is a planoi` a portion oi' the slide upon which the locking-piece passes, when the window is locked.
-Similar marks of reference denote the sanne parts.
This sash-fastener is made in the 4form' of a. divided dove-tai* or under-cut slide,one part being secured to one of thelaeeting-rails ofthe sash, and the other to the othervmeeting-rail, and upo'n. these a. locking-piede -is fitted tasiile so that when dranmv upon one othe parts, the sash can be opened, but when the locking-piece is moved te embrace both parts of the slide, the sushes are held firmly, and as this locking-piece slides :it-right angles to the meetingraiis, knife or thin instrument inserted Between thesaiil rails, cannot be used to press back the locking-piece; hence this `i`astening is very seeure, and the construction is such that it is very strong, simple, durable, and cheap. v l
In the drawing, a and a? represent portions of the meetingrails ot"any ordinarysash. b and c are the portions of' the under-cut or dovetail slide, attached upon line with eachother to the respective meetingrails, a and a of the sashes, by suitable screws, and e. The under-cut or dove-tail portion of the slideja issuicient to receive the sliding locking-piece h, as in tig. 3, when the sashes are unlocked, but. the slide c is only-sufficient for receiving half ofthe locking-piece li, as seen in figs'. 1, 2, and 4, so-that the two partsfb-and a, cannot be separated, and thereby the window-sashes are securely locked together. Upon the slides b and e are the'projeeting portions or ilangesf and g, to determine the amount of' motion of thelocking-pieee z, and a. pin, z', entering a groove in the' under surface of it, prevents the `said locking-piece k becoming separated from the slide b. i
A friction-springmay alsobe applied to prevent theloeking-piece being shaken out of position in moving. the sashes.
WhathI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The divided under-cut or dove-tail slide b c, in combination with the slidingl constructed and applied substantially asset forth to form `a. sash-fastener.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my signature, this twenty-.fifth day of' January, 1868.
