COASTING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION farming part of Lettera Patent No. '768,977I dated August 30, 1904,
Application filed February 23,1904. Serial Ho. 194.699. (No model.)
To UJI wtmn. fi. may concern:
Be it known that we, immun F. CLARK and Purim T. PERRAULT, citizens of the United States, and residents of.North Adams, in the county ol Berkshire and Stute of assachw scttsdizire invented a new and lmprovedCoasting Device, of which the following is a full. clefu'. :1nd exact description.
Uur invention relates to devices employed in coasting, beingexpocially adapted for the use of children; and it consists in the various feature-Q and combinations: hereinafter described and more particularly claimed.
Reference is te belmd to thenecompnnring d rnwings, forming n pnrt of this npeciliention, in whiehsimiler characters of reference indicate correspondingl pnrl's in all the figures.
Figure 1 shows our improved coasting device in use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of one embodimentof seid device, parts beiner broken tw-uy; and Fig. 3 is a fall front elevation thereof.
ldesignetes a runner, which, as here illustrated, is cut from Home siitable wood and is preferably shed with a strip of metal 11 secured thereto. "The forward end is shown ns curved nl; 12, and between its ends the runner is provided with 4un npwardcxtension 13,\ vl\ich l is reeezed to receive lthe tongue I4 of e stzmdard 15, formed from wood und rising from the runner.n At the rear end of the standard is a diagonal brace I6, extending from points near .the upper extra-mityof the standerdrand they rearcf the runner and having its ends conform thereto. 'lhe b reee is secured at said ends to the contacting-elemente by mums of 'bolts l?, pausing through holen in the runner and standard, the headrg 18 of said bolts being preferably coamtersunk 'below the snrfuee. Upon theI upper en d of thest'andard is carried a :wat li), ef wood or other material, and lletween theseat and standen-lend is preferably interposed a reinforcing-bar 2|). here shown axel' metal, extundingrflongitndinally,of the sont. Said sent. is secured in place by means of screws 21,1xteniling through into the enlergml end 2U- ofA the standard and situated ulm" each side el' thel ,reinforcing-har. From the under side, near each` end, to the ce'. '"5- sponding side of the standard extend lateral breees 22 22,wliiel\ muy be fixed to the latter element by a. single bolt 23 nud to the former by screws 24,1mssing through the reinforcing,rn bnr into the scat. At the under side of eaeh ond of the seat is also preferably attached :t transverse grip-bnr 25, which will lnerve to prevent the lingers of the user from slippingr from their hold.
In the usent' ourdeviemwvbieh is commonly termed a "snow-bike, one planes himHelt` upon the seat, and, grasping the ends, raises the feet from the ground :md slides upon the runner, maintaining,r n balance in n verliefd position. lt will tend to increase the speed and also furnish admirable exercise it' the loin; are swung beck and forth hiring the slide. It will he seen that it is nnmeessary during the coasting to apply the feet to the ground, und therefore the weer andtear upon chil- -drens shoes is largely saved, Y:ind it is poseble to readily turn or to dismount to avoid collision.
Although the' runner. standard, and seat have been described as made of wood, it will he obvious that amr other suitable material ma)r he 'substituted and still he within the spirit of our invention .and also thnt an;r desii-ed number of seats may be applied in tandem to a single runner.
The xrsqociation of the reinforcing-bar und braces witlifthe seat in the mxmner specilied and connection nnd bracingr of the runner and standard result. in an exceedingly strongntrncture not liable to break in use.
Having thus described our invention` we claim :es new end'desire to Secure by Letters Patent-- l. ln a coasting device, the emnbnation with n runner., of a `wtandard rising therefrom. a seat earriednpon the upperend of thestandanhand a reinforcingdmr interpoxlal hein-een tliestandard and sean A.
