PATENT OFFICE.
BOX-LID SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 768,519, dated August 23, 1904,
Application filed February 27, 1903. ,Serial No. 145,415. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLEN E. Cox, a citizen or a device for holdinga box-lid in such relation to the box-body that the latter will be disposed at an angle of inclination for conveniently displaying its contents.
The improved device also includes means for holding a label to indicate the quality or tradename and price of the goods contained within the box.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple device which may be readily applied to orremoved from a box and cheaply manufactured and having a construction which will positively hold a box at an angle of inclination until manually removed and cause the lid of the box to serve as a support therefor without requiring the use of other devices for a similar purpose.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed. I
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box, showing the improved device applied thereto and as holding a label. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the improved device.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the views.
The box-lid support embodying the features of this invention isparticularly adapted for and comprises a lower horizontal bracing-bar 1, continued into end clamping members 2 of rectangularform, equally elevated above the bar 1 and disposed in planes at right angles to the latter, the free extremities of the clamping members being upwardly rebent at the rear to provide label-holding hooks 3, which are of less length than the rear portions of the clamping members.
In applying. the improved device the boxlid 4 isturned down against the rear side of the box-body 5 and the support or holder is slipped over the upper edge of the rear side of the box-body and the contiguous edge of the lid 4, the dimension of each clamping member being such'in relation to the combined thickness of the rear side of the boxbody and the lid 4 that a firm frictional engagement will be set up. between the clamping members and the parts of the box engaged thereby. The improved device is pressed downwardly over the rear side of the boxbody and the adjacent portion of the lid until the upper ends of the clamping members firmly bear on the upper edge of the rear side of the box-body and the contiguous edge of the lid, and when the device is so disposed the bracing-bar 1 will firmly bear against the front surface of the rear side of the box-body below the upper edge of the latter and overcome any tendency of tilting movement or accidental disengagement of the device from its applied position. The rear portions of the clamping members will closely engage the lid 4, and the lower parts of the hooks 3 will be disposed a considerable distance below the adjacent upper edge of the lid 4, as said lid is shown arranged in Fig. 1. A label or other marking means may be inserted in the hooks 3, and the latter have such length as to preover, by disposing the hooks 3 at the rear and in a depressed position a label or analogous device inserted therein is less liable to become displaced. The improved device is also of such compact form that it does not in the least interfere with the removal of the articles contained within the boX, and when applied the lid of a box will be caused to serve as a prop to dispose the box-body at an angle of inclination for advantageously displaying the contents thereof.
Having thus fully described the invention, What is claimed as new is In combination with a box, having a lid hinged to the upper part of one edge thereof, of a box-lid support, consisting of a single piece of wire bent to form a horizontal bracing bar 1 continued into rectangular clamping members 2, equally elevated above the said bar and disposed in planes at right angles to the latter, the clamping members being open at the bottom and closed at the top and having their side portions at a distance from each other equal to the thickness of the box side and cover, the free extren1ities of the clamping members being upwardly rebent at the rear to provide label-holding books 3 which are parallel with said extre1ni- ALLEN E. COX.
