Be it known that we, WILLIAM A. Mums and J OHN T. FIsKE, citizens of the United States,
residing at Port Chester, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Gas-Ranges, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to means for obtaining access to the burners of a gas-range below the oven-bottom and between the sameand the broiling-chamber with which gasranges are usually provided for the twofold purpose of lighting and visually inspecting the burners. Heretofore access has been provided to these burners, but the space was exceedingly limited and the visible area restricted.
In carrying out our invention the entire oven-bottom is movable and we provide means for raising the same bodily or at the forward part, for holding the oven-bottom when raised,
and for returning the same to an initial position, which means preferably comprise a rod placed transversely of the gas-range, means connected thereto and extending tocontact with the oven-bottom, and a handle thereon outside of the range. In raising the .ovenbot tom bodily the same may be lifted entirely clear of and above its supports or it may be in part supported at the back edge and be raised entirely at the forward edge. To pre' vent the oven-bottom moving forward while being raised at the forward edge, we provide means adjacent to the edge having the least motion for holding the same in position, and which means preferably comprise end notches in the side supporting-flanges and pins depending from the corners of the oven-bottom.
In the drawings, Figures, 1 and 2 are vertical cross-sections through a gas-range and at right angles to one another and showing the preferred form of our invention, the upper portions of said rangebeing broken through and Fig. 3 is asectional plan of the gas-range directly above the oven-bottom. Fig. 4 is a cross-section illustrating a form of our invention. Figs. 5 and 6 are vertical cross-sections at right angles to one another, showing a form of our invention; and Figs. 7 and 8 are vertical cross-sections" at right angles to one anter, is a cam Z.

We provide support-flanges 3, secur'edto the respective sides 0 of the gas-range and coming directly beneath the oven-bottom for supporting the same. These flanges at their back ends are provided with notches 4;, and at the adjacent corners of the oven-bottom g are depending pins 5, which pass into'these notches 4 to prevent the oven-bottombeing accidentally drawn forward.
We provide a shaft *5, passing transversely across and through the sides of the gas-range slightly below the oven-bottom and forward of the central line of the gasrange,-upon the outer end of which shaft 6 outside of the gasrange is a handle /z; for turning the same.- Upon this shaft within the range and in the upper part of the broiling-chamber, beneath the oven bottom, approximately in the cen- The office of this cam is to raise the entire forward portion of the ovenbottom into the inclined and dotted position shown in Fig. 1. In the form of our invention shown in Fig. l and connectin -rods 14, also simultaneouslv 4t the lifting device comprises an arm 7 and handle 8 in the general form of a bell-crank and located at about the central portion of a gas-stove upon a shaft and in about the position of the cam (Shownin Figs. 1 and This arm 7 extends beneath the oven-bottom and the handle 8 through an opening in the plate between the oven-door and the door of the broiling-chamber. and by swinging said parts into the position shown in dotted lines the ovenbottom is raised entirely at the forward part and supported upon the arm 7, which in this position is substantially vertical. The ovenbottom is lowered by simply reversing the position of the parts.
In the form of invention shown in Fig. 5 and the left-hand side of Fig. 6 the back Z), sides a, and bottom cl of the gas-range are made double that is, with outer' and inner walls. The shaft 7; extends across through the sides and between the walls of the double bottom near the forward edge. Upon this shaft isa handle 7t" outside the gas-range and crank-arms 11 within. On the under side of the oven-bottom are lugs 9, and links 10 extend from the same to the free ends of the crank-arms 11, the bottom of the broilingchamber or inner portion of the double bottom being slotted for the movement of the crank-arms 11. In this form of the invention when the shaft 1." is turned by the handle the crank-arms and the links are straightened and the entire forward portion of the ovenbottom raised. There is but a slight difference between the form at the right hand of Fig. 6 and the form at the left hand. In the form at the right hand the movement of the crank-arm 11 on the shaft 2' and the movement of the link 10 are in the double side walls and the upper end of the link 10 is bent forward and passes through a slot in the side wall in the oven proper and connects with a lug rising from the oven-bottom at the forward corner. The operation, however, is identical.

\Ve prefer the form of invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, or the form shown in Fig. a to the forms shown in Figs. 5 to 8, inclusive, because there are less parts to make, to assemble, to arrange in the gas-stove, and to get out of order or replace.
In our improvement the integrity of the oven-bottom is maintained that is to say, it is not provided with an aperture and with raised flanges for a sliding structure through which access is obtained to the burners and which interferes with the full and complete use of the oven-bottom. Our improvement is simpler, it is less expensive to construct, and there are no complications of parts to get out of order and require adjustment.
We claim as our invention 1. In a gas-range and in combination, a separate movable oven-bottom, supports therefor, burners beneath the oven-bottom, and means for raising the oven-bottom bodily to obtain access to the burners.
2. In a gas-range, and in combination, a separate movable oven-bottom, supports therefor, burners beneath the oven-lmttom, means for raising the oven-bottom bodily to obtain access to the burners, and means for preventing any forward sliding movement of the oven-bottom while being raised.
3. In a gas-range and in combination, a separate and detachable oven-bottom, supports therefor along the sides of the range, a shaft -passing across through the sides of the range near the front edge of the oven-bottom, a cam structure connected to the shaft and means for turning the shaft to raise the forward portion of the oven-bottom by the cam so as to provide an opening beneath the forward edge for the full width of the oven-bottom providing access to the burners and for the visual inspection thereof.
4:. In a gas-range and in combination, a separate and detachable oven-bottom, supporting-flanges along the respective sides of the gas-range upon which the oven-bottom rests, said flanges at their back ends being notched, pins secured to the adjacent corners of the oven-bottom and received in said notches and thereby fixing the relation of the back edge of the oven-bottom to its supports, and means for raising the oven-bottom along its forward and opposite edge for providing access to the burners.
5. In a gas-range and in combination, a separate and detachable oven-bottom, supporting-flanges along the respective sides of the gas-range upon which the oven-bottom rests, said flanges at their back ends belng notched, plns secured to the ad acent cornersof the oven-bottom andreceived in said notches and thereby fixing the relation of the back edge of the oven-bottom to its supports, a shaft passing across and through the sides of the gas-range and near the front, a handle outside of the range for turning the shaft, a cam on the shaft inside of the range and about cen' trally beneath the oven-bottom and adapted when turned to raise the forward portionof the oven-bottom so as to provide access to the burners and a visual inspection of the same.
6. Ina gas-range and in combination, a separate movable oven-bottom, supports therefor, burners beneath the oven-bottom, and means for raising the entire forward portion of the oven-bottom to obtain access to the 1 burners.
7 In agas-range, and in combination, aseparate movable oven-bottom, supports therefor, burners beneath the oven-bottom, means for raising the entire forward portion of the oven-bottom to obtain access to the burners, and means for preventing any forward sliding movement of the oven-bottom while being raised.
8. In a gas-range and in combination, a separate and detachable oven-bottom, supportstherefor'along the sides of the range, a shaft passing across through the sides of the range near the front portion thereof, means for turning the said shaft, meansactuated-by the shaft and connected to the oven-bottom and interposed between the two, by the movement of which the oven-bottom is raised bodily and an opening provided beneath the forward edge for the full width of the oven-bottom to give access to the burners and for thevisual inspection thereof.
