; E STATES 'PATEN'I: OFFICE ARTHUR srocxsmaom, or's'r. LouIs,,MIssouR-I, ASSIGNOR 'ro AMERrcAmsrovE COM- PANY, or sit. Louis; mIssoU I, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY swmeINGcovnR-FOR THE- TOP BU NER PORTION or swovns Application filed March 21,
This invention relates to improvements in swinging covers for the top 'burner portion of stoves and it pertains to a swinging-cover that is adapted to swing over the top burner 5 portion when it is not being used, and is adapted to be swung into an upright backward'position' whenit is to be used.
Manufacturers-have realized that the top burner portion of a range being "constantly exposed collects dust and 'dirt and presents an unseemly appearance to the range when it is not in-use. The broad idea. of the; present improve ment is to protect the exposed burners and -;the exposed open part from the collection of dirt and dust when not in use and t'o'give the v 1 stove a finished appearance when it is not in Manufacturers realizing, these defects inordinary gas ranges have been for some time engaged in overcoming-the above faults in ordinary ranges. So far as I am aware how-j ever the means used for protectingthe pen v part of the ranges have not accomplished the 5 result in a manner which will produce the above advantages.
The primary object of the present improvement may be said to embody the idea of hingingi a cover to the range whereby when the stove is in use the same is in vertical posi tion at the rear of the top-portion, and when it is not in use the cover is simply swung for ward over the open portion and protects it and at the same time greatlyimprovesthe appearance of the range. A vfurther" improvement is to 'make this swinging protectingcover so that when the open portion of the range is in use the cover acts 'asa splash backforthe top burners and i furthermore the improvement when lifted over the top burner portions acts as a high 1 top shelfmpon which articles'can be placed.
A further'improvement is in so constructing this protecting cover that it is hinged at points located inside of the rear edge of the open part whereby the cover when it is closed over the burners still further acts to improve I the appearance of the range. 4
. The ranges as ordinarily built have at one 9 side of the burner topa roasting ovenand a of the roasting ov'e tion.
swinging cover. V I Referring to Figure 1 of the drawings 1929; Serial No. 3489766.
broileroven and the roasting oven extends considerably above the open burner portion of the range.
Another improvement is making this propresenting a stove whichin appearance is quite attractive and at the same time when the cover is moved to its vertical position a shelf is providedthat is as wide as the dis-. tance between the top burner part and the top There are certain other features ofthe inf vention :whichwill be described and shown' hereinafter. Figure 1 is a perspective .view of a gas range with my improved coverapplied thereto and the cover raised to"expose the open burner portion.
with my improved cover in its closed posi- Figur the line 3-9-3 ofFigure 2.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of. the rear end of the range with my improved swing e3 is a cross sectional view taken on Figure 2 is a perspective view of a range ing cover applied to it and shown its closed position.
Figure '5 is a rearperspective view of the range with the protecting cover raised.
- Figure 6 is a horizontal central section taken through the cover portion on the line 6.6-of Fig.3.
Figure 7 is a sectional perspective view taken horizontally through .one end of the which shows this improvement applied to a. gas range and .in which figure, 1 indicates the roasting oven and 2 the broiling oven. Located to one sideof these ovens is the top burner portion 3. This top burner portion is located in a horizontal plane below the horizontal plane of the top 4 of the roasting oven: Thus far I have explainedthe usual construction of gas rangesof this type.
The rangeshown in Figure 1 has its gas manifold concealed, which however forms no part of the present invention, and passing through the frontportion 5 below the open burner portion 3 are a plurality of handles 1 6 which'are connected with the top burners (not shown) located in the housing of the top burner portion.
The present improvement comprises a hinged cover A which when in its horizontal position shown in Figures 2 and 3- covers the top burner portion 3 and therefore protects .it from observation when the. burners are not in operation and also protects the burners from accumulatlng dirt. I The cover coinprises 1n the construction herein shown a portion 11 which is the top thereof when in the A horizontal closed position and Bis the front of this cover A while its ends consist of the.
outer walls 13 and 14. Thetop portion 11 and its side portion 13 an dl4each are provid ed with an inner wall 15 and 16.v These a 29' are constructed and arranged noted that the lower ends of the cover A are their ends are in telescopic relation as shown- In the specific construction and arrangement of the ends 20 in the construction shown in Figure Z, the rear end a of the inner wall 16 is bent outwardly and the. corresponding end I) of the inner wall 18 passes outwardlybetween' the inwardly bent end a andthe inwardly bent end c of the wall 14, while the outer wall 11 has its-end (Z bent around and inwardlyand resting against the inwardly .bent end 0 of the wall ,14'. All the'ends of these walls are'clamped together in any desired planner. Theends of the vertical walls 1 13 and 15 at the opposite side of the cover A and the opposite ends of the walls29 and in the same relation-as that describedabove.
By reference to Figures 1 and 7 it will be pivotally connected with the edges of the top burner portion 3. The particular man ner of hinging these parts is shown in ure 7. 'From this figure-it will be observed that one portion 21 of the hinge passes through the top burner part 3 and is suitably secured to it while the other member of the hinge 22 is located between the walls 16 and 21 and 14, the said members 26 being riveted to the bent end 20 of the inner wall 15. It will be understood from the fore: going that when the cover A is turned in its horizontal position over the top plate 3 for,
the purpose. of concealing it and its'burners (not shown) that it is held in this position by gravity.
For the purpose of assisting in raising this cover to afvertical position a suitable spring and link. connection 23 is attached to both sides of the cover. This construction in-. volves the links'24 with their upper ends 25 pivoted to members 26 that pass through openings 26 made in the link end 22' while.
the opposite ends of the links 24 are attached by means of a spring 27 tothe rear wall 28 of the range housing. Thisis a contracting spring so that it assists in the lifting of the I cover and also prevents the cover fromslammingwhen closed to a horizontal position.
By reference to Figures 3 and 6 the special construction of the front 11 is shown. It.
consists essentially of a central'portion 29 having its inner ends 30 turned inward and a surrounding member 31 having its inner ends bent inwardly and telescoping said ends 30, the telescoping ends and the corresponding end 32 of the splash plate 18 are connected by suitable bolts 33-while the outer edge of the part 31 is connected by bolts, 34 with an in- A wardly turned end of the top portion 11.
Attention is directed to the fact that the inner end of the cover is open so that when the cover is turned to vertical position there is nothing to interfere with-the burner top v 3. When the range is set up for operation the rear wall thereof is placed close to the ,wall of the room so that it is immaterial that the inner'end of the swinging cover is not closed.
Attention is also wall 18 stops at-the top burner'portion' 3 so that there is nothing to interfere with the top burner portion 3 when it is being turned However the opposite to vertical position. or outer wall 13 .does extend downward as at 35 and it is located'outside of the range wall-36 so that it telescopes the said wall as clearly shown.
Furthermore the splash plate 18 does not extend beyond the member 22, which member when the cover is raised rests on the top of the open burner top portion. From Figure 3 it will also be seen thatthe top portion 11 is extended inward beyond the inner end of the splash plate 18 as shown at 11 so that when the cover is turned to horizontal position this part prevents any opening throughout the width of the;range, thus leaving the top of the range as shown in Figures 1 and 2. I i
called to thefa'ct that the i I The location of the hinged members will be such as to prevent the extended portion 11 of the top 11 from swinging in the arc of a circle substantially beyond the rear wall 37 of the. range. Thisinvention is also adapted to form a this form of cover gives suflicient room when covered cooking compartment; that is to say it is closed-between the top 11 and the top burner part 3 to receive a teapot or a frying pan or other cooking utensils. I This cover or compartment as shown has its rear end open so that smoke, steam etc. will pass out the open rear end and at the'same time is also adapted to form a cover as herein previously described. For instance should occasion arise cooking can be done in the compartment when 1t 1s 1n its downward or closed position and thus hiding or concealing what is being cooked, and at the same time permit free access thereto by lifting the said cover. For instance anyonecooking with the cover raised and anyone should call, can conceal what is cooking by simply lowering this cover and the cooking'would proceed At the same time the cover is'adapted when lowered to conceal this top burner portion "movement for use ona gas range, it can and when the cover is raised to act as a splash back, as previously described.
While I have described and shown this imbe'u'sed on ranges for covering and protecting a top. burner portlon of ranges using other kinds of fuel or means for cooking purposes, therefore my improvement is not lnnlted in its broadestsense to gas ranges.
, Having thus described nryinvention what I claim and desire to/secure by Letters Patent isi I v 1.
