UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ARTHUR STOCKSTROM, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN STOVE COM- PANY, OF. ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A. CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY COOKING RANGE CONSTRUCTION 2 Application filed September 19, 1929. Serial No. 398,808.
This invention relates to improvements in cooking range constructions, the particular improved feature of construction being a hinged lid which serves as a combined cover for the cooking top of the range and a splash plate for the back end or rear edge of the cooking top.
The primary object of the inventionis the provision of a cooking .range havlng an 1mproved appearance.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a cooking range having ahinged lid for the cooking top of'the range whlch lid also serves as a splash plate or splash back for the cooking top. portion of the range.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a lid for thepurpose described which is of an improved and novel construction; mounted upon the range n an improved and novel manner; which is hlghly eflicient in operation and serves to improve the appearance of the range; and furthermore is of a construction which is simple and cheap of manufacture yet sufliclently sturdy to withstand the continued use to which it is subjected.
Other specific novel features ofconstruction and improved results of the invention will appear from the following description and accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation illustrating a range having the improved invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken longitudinally through the range cooking top and the improved lid therefor.
' The present invention is suitable for application to cooking ranges of many different and varied types as well as cooking ranges using various different heating fuels, but in the drawings of the invention is illustrated as being applied to a gas range.
By reference to the drawings it will be seen thatthe gas range is of the more or less conventional type inasmuch as at one end or side of the range there is provided what is commonly called an open cooking top'A while at the'other side or end of the ralrlgg3 are the cooking and broiling ovens B an The range illustrated is of the so-called concealed manifold type in that the burner chamber below the cooking top A is completely enclosed at its front by a front panel D which hides the gas supply ipe, the burners and the burner valves. ontrol of the burner valves is had through the medium of a plurality of valve handles 5 mounted upon the outer face of the front plate D.
As is also somewhat common in respect to cooking ranges a utensil drawer E is provided in the bottom of the range below the burner chamber of the open cooking top and provided with handles 6 by which it is readily manipulated.
A great many gas ranges today are provided with an automatic thermostat heat control for the oven burner and in the present tion which is an improved attachment therefor.
The hinged cover or lid for the open cooking top of the range is made in two pieces H and J which are connected together at their,
one ends by a suitable hinge 9.
Pivotally supported as at 10 upon the opposite'rear corners of the cooking top frame G are two hinge arms or brackets 11 so shaped that their upwardly extending outer ends 12'are in spaced relation to the rear wall 13 of the cooking top frame member G a distance approximately equivalent to the thickness of the lid or cover portion H. These hinge or bracket arms 11 form a pivotal support forthe cover portions H and J as the cover portion J is bolted or otherwise suitably attached to the ends 12 of these arms as illustrated at 14. The brackets 11 have enlarged ends 11 which, when the brackets are supporting the cover portions; in elevated positions, abut the inner face of the cooking top frame member G and serve as stops against the movement of the brackets in one direction and with the pivots 10 actually cause the brackets to support the cover portions in their proper elevated positions.
' With the parts in the positions illustrated in full lines in the drawing it will be seen that the cover portion H is in back to back relation to the cover portion J and forms a splash back at the rear edge or end of the open cooking top and that the parts will remain in this position becauseof the pull exerted by the coil springs '15, which have their one end's connected as at 16 to the hinge arms while their opposite ends 17 are hooked over suitable lugs 18 struck out upon the side walls of the cooking top frame member Gr For the purpose of makin a more pleasing appearance each of the l 1d members are flanged to form end walls 19 while centrally of their area they, are depressed as at 20. Surrounding this depressed area in these members is a straight or fiat portion 21 and pivotally attached as at 23 to'this portion of the cover and extends outwardly through a suitable opening 24 provided centrally of the lower edge ofthis' member. This pivotally attached handle makes it' much easier to manipulate the cover parts, especially the front cover portion, while they are swung inv the arc of movement which they necessarilytake when being elevated.
WVhen the cover is pulled into itslowered position to act as a lid for the open cooking top the hinge arms or brackets 11 are moved to a position past dead-center so that their straight arm portions 11 ab t the outer face of the rear wall 13 of the co king top frame member G as illustrated in dotted lines in Figure 2 of the drawings. W hen in this position the spring will again hold the parts in the desired set position because the pull of the spring will cause the straight arm por tions 11 of the'hinge arms to more firmly abut the rear wall of the cooking top frame.
When this attachment is used in respect to' a'cooking range without a thermostatic control'the cover can be raised and lowered by.
merely grasping the knob 22'and pulling outwardly upon the same, but when there IS a thermostatic control housing or box F on the side of the oven adjacent the open cooking top a little more care must be taken to raise and lower the cover because then the leading edge of the cover portion -H must be kept down close to the cooking top frame member so that the portion H of the cover will slide under the thermostatic housing.
By reference'to Figure 2 of the drawings it will be seen that when the cover parts are in their raised or folded positions the cover portion J is in a vertical plane beyond the rear end of the cooking top framemember and that it is wider or deeper than the splash back portionH of the cover as is necessary for it to extend downwardly sufliciently far to be attached to the'ends 12 of the hinge arms or brackets. Ihe splash back or cover portion H is of a width or depth sothat when the cover is in its elevated position its lower edge just clears the range open cooking top.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a very useful attachment for cooking ranges which performs a double function, namely, that of acting both as a splash back and cover for the open cooking portion of the range. When the range is not in use the cover can be lowered thus hiding the more or less non-pleasing appearing cooking top portion of the range and at the same time will provide a place for the deposit of utensils or other kitchen implements. By hiding the cooking top portion of the range a range of more pleasing appearance is provided and the appearance is enhanced in the present instance by enameling the cover top portions to match the rest of the range, which is of the enameled type. 4
Attention is directed to the fact that the dimensions of the lid portions H and J and their mountings are such that when they are in their elevated or vertical positions their upper edges are in the same horizontal plane with the top of the oven. This feature lends to the appearance of the range in that it does not break up the symetrical and balanced outline of the range. 7
' Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a cooking range having an open cooking top portion, a combined cover and splash back plate for said range cooking top portion comprising a pair of lid members having at one edge hinge connection with one another so that they can be folded in back to back relation, hinge arms supported upon said cooking top portion of the ran e, one of said lid members rigidly attache to said hinge arms, means to hold said hinge arms normally in their lowered positions to support the folded lid portions in a vertical plane-at the rear edge of the cooking top portion of the'range, and means to swing said lid portions downwardly and forwardly into an unfolded position to act as a cover for the cooking top portion of the range. I
2. In combination with a cooking range havin an open cooking top ortion the frame of which has at its edges a epen'din flange,
a cover for said cooking top portion, rackets pivotally connected to the depending flange of the cooking to I portion adjacent the rear edge thereof an beneath the cooking top portion, said brackets having rearwardly and upwardly extending portions, the cover at' one edge being attached to the upwardly extending portions of the brackets, the ends of said brackets adapted to abut the depend-' ing flange at the rear edge of said cooking 'top portion to form a stop and support for 2 the brackets, and-means to hold said bracket arms normally in a position to support the cover in a vertical position at the rear edge of the cooking top portion of the ran e, and means to swing said cover downwar y and 2 forwardly to act as a cover for the cooking top portion of the range. 3. In combination with a cooking range having an open cooking top portion witha depending flange, a combined cover and 80 splashrback plate for said range cooking top portion comprising a. pair of cover members having swinging connection with one another so that they can be folded in back to back relation, brackets pivotally supported 85 upon the flange of the cooking top member and positioned beneath the same at its rear edge, said brackets having rearwardly and upwardly extending portions, said upwardly extending portions of the brackets being 40 spaced from the rear edge of the cooking top portion of the range a distance approximate 1y equal to the thickness of the cover portion which covers the front. port-ion of the cooking top, the cover portion which covers the rear portion of the cooking top being rigidly attac ed to the upwardly extending portions of the brackets, means to hold said bracket arms normally in a .fisition to support the folded cover portions in a vertical plane at r the rear edge of the cooking top portionof the range and means to swing said cover portions downwardly and forwardly upon the pivotally mounted brackets to act as a 7 cover for the cooking top portion of the range.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature. a g
