To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. Serena, of the city and county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have, invented a new and useful Improvement in Doors for Stoves and Ranges; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

This invention has reference to an improvement in stoves and ranges, and more particularly to the oven of such stoves and ranges, in which a shelf is soconneeted with the door that on closing the door the shelf will move out of the way of the door, and'on opening the door the shelf will bebrought to a line on a level with the oven to facilitate the insertion or withdrawing of any pans or dishes.

The invention consists in providing the stove or range both with means for securing an inside automatically-operated oven-shelf and means for securing an automatically-operated outside oven-shelf, thus enabling either one of such shelves to. be used with the stove.

It further consists in making the ordinary door so that either the cam or the pin can be readily secured to the door, and the door can be used with either kind of shelf or without the shelf, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.

Figure 1 is a partial view of a stove fitted with an oven-door provided with a finger or pin, by which a shelf resting on inclines is made to slide up to a level with the oven when the door is opened and down below the door when the door, is closed. Fig.2 is a sectional view of an oven-door, showing the manner of connecting the finger to the door. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a stove fitted with an ovendoor and a shelf operated by a cam, so that the shelf will be raised above the level of the oven when the door is being closed and lowered to the level of the oven when the door is opened. This shelf may also be hinged and operated by acam, so as to fold within the oven.

Fig. 4 is a partial view of the'oven-door, showing the manner of connecting the cam to the door. Fig. 5 is a perspective of part of a stove, showing one of the holes in the wall of the oven for the reception of the hinge-pintle of the inside shelf, and showing also the outside shelf raised to its highest position by the finger projectin g from the lower surface of the door. Fig. 6 is a similar view, showing the inside shelf attached and in its lowest position, the lugs for the outside shelf being shown in dotted lnes.

In the cooking stove and range trade the dealers have to accommodate themselves to the wants and caprices of their customers, some of whom want their cooking stoves or ranges with the plain doors and without the projecting shelves. Others desire the self raising and lowering outside shelf, while still others require the shelf that folds into the oven. Stoves and ranges require considerable room to exhibit the same in a store, and when of the same kind and size of stoves and ranges three varieties have to be kept on hand to suit the customers a much larger stock has to be carried than is warranted by the profits made.

To avoid this difficulty and enable any of the stoves or ranges to be readily converted into the form desired, I provide the same with all the devices required to secure the shelf in either one of the positions, and provide the doorwith a bolt and a recessed seat adapted to receive either the finger for operating the sliding shelf or the cam for operating the foldin g shelf, so that at the option of the customer the same stove or range can be sold without the shelf, with an outside automatically-adjustable shelf, or with an inner automaticallyadjustable shelf.

In the drawings, A is the stove or oven door. 13 is the outside shelf, supported on incline ways 11. O is a finger secured to the door by means of a bolt, and constructed to fit the corner of the door, so that when fastened by the bolt the finger will be rigidly secured. This finger enters a slot in the shelf B, and raises or lowers the same when the door is either opened or closed.

In Figs. 3 and 4 the folding shelf D ispro- 5 with the lugs g, on which the outside shelf is supported, and also interior]; with holes to receive the hinge-pins h for the folding shelf, and the dealer has only to keep these two shelves on hand, and secure by means of the boltf the finger 0 if an outside shelf is wanted, or the cam E if an inside shelf isdesired, or neither if the stove or range is required Without a shelf.

I am aware that the shelves B and D have been used before my invention of the present improvement; but stoves or ranges provided feature, broadly.

Having thus described myinvention, I claim 26 as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A stove or range provided, substantially as before set forth, with lugs g for supporting an outside oven-shelf and with pin-holes for 2 5 receiving the hinge-pins h of an inside ovenshelf. v

2. In combination with a stove or range provided with lugs g for supporting an outside shelf and with pin holes for receiving the 0 hinge-pins h of an inside shelf, a door adapted to be fitted either with a cam for operating the inside shelf or with a finger for operating the outside shelf, as described.
