a Noam/134 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OVEN-DOOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 2, 1921.
Application filed September 3, 1920. 'Serial No. 408,062.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MIoHAnL THIERY, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oven-Doors, of which the following specification is a full disclo sure.
This invention relates to improvements in ovens, and particularly to means for protecting from breakage the transparent panels in the doors thereof, when the doors are in open position.
An object is to provide a cover for the transparent panel which will act as a support for cooking utensils as well as a protecting screen to prevent breakage of the panel.
Another object is to provide means for automatically positioning the protecting cover respectively over 'the transparent panel, when the door is fully open, and within the upperpart of the oven at an angle to the door when the door is closed, the relative positioning of the said cover being automatically attained by the opening and closing of the said door.
Additional objects are to so proportion the elements of the device that their operation will in no way disturb the contents of the oven, and to so design the mechanism that the protecting cover will alternately cover the transparent door panel, and be housed in the upper part of the oven, to permit a view of the interior of the same.
Other objects and certain advantages will appear in the description, and reference is made to the drawings forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section through an oven illustrating the manner of attaching my improvement, the door being in closed position.
Fig. 2 is a section on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the door in open osition and illustrating in dot-and-dash llnes the successive positions of my mechanism during the open ing movement of the oven door.
A conventional stove oven is represented at 1, the door thereof at 2, being hinged at 3 to the oven casing and provided with a glass panel 4. A protecting plate 5 is hinged as at 6, to the interior of the door 2, preferably at the upper end' opposite the door hinges and a crank arm 7 is rigidly attached to the pintle 8 of the plate 5. Pivoted at 9, to the crank-arm 7 is a lever 10, the opposite end of the same being pivoted at 11, to the oven casing or base and interior of the oven. A stop 12 is provided to limit the door in a horizontal position.
hen the door is closed, the protecting plate 5 assumes a horizontal position within and at the top of the oven, permitting an unobstructed view of the interior of the oven through the transparent door panel.
The action of the protecting plate 5, when the door begins its opening movement, permits the withdrawal of the plate in a substantially horizontal position, in order to avoid contact between the plate and the contents of the oven or shelving, the plate being entirely withdrawn from the interior of the oven when the door has moved through approximately one-half of its arc. As shown in Fig. 3, the plate 5 entirely covers and thoroughly protects the panel 4;, in its open horizontal position.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
In a device of the class described, an oven casing, a glazed oven door providing a clo sure for the casing hingedly connected to the casing, a cover plate pivotally secured upon the inside face of the door for covering the glazed portion of the door when the door is open, and a link having one end pivotally connected to the inside of the oven casing opposite the hinged end of the cover plate, and its opposite end pivotally connected to said cover plate for swinging said plate with the swinging movement of the door to a position parallel with the plane of the door covering the glazed portion thereof when the door is open and to a position at right angles to the door when the door is closed.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name, as attested by the two subscribing witnesses.
MICHAEL THIERY.
