SAFETY APPLIANCE FOR STOVES AND RANGES Filed June 17, 1936 '20 tioned patent, whereby the device may be more 7 or compartment as shown in Figure 3 for limit- 20 Patented Apr. 26,1938 a 2,115,305
uui'rizo STATES PATENT OFFICE Frederick Fox, Washington, D. 0., assilnor to m Sistove Works, Cicero, 11]., a corpora tion o 1 Application June 17 1936. Serial No. 85,785 I 3 Claims. (01. 126-37) This invention relates to cooking stoves of the located in the compartment 5 below the burner cabinet type in which a coveris used to conceal top, one of said burners being indicated at 8,
0 turned on when the cover is in burner top concompartment 5 and has a shank se d' the '10 order. vention comprises means for operatively connect- 25 Another object of the present invention is to n the burner t p cover I! with th p rat provide an improved device of the above kind stems I0 01' the burner control valves or elements ing a difierent arrangement of burner control adjacent Side wall of the b rne o cfl p 30 above-mentioned patent. l and downwardly where it is attached adjacent its W th the a V9 general objects in view, and other end to the side wall of the box or compartothers that will become apparent as the nature ment 5 near the front wall ofthe latter as at H. v 1 of the present invention is better understood, The internal member or flexible wire I8 of this 35 more fully described, shown in the accompanying other end to the stems III of the valves or control drawing and claimed. elements 9. As shown. the.first-mentioned oper- 40 In the drawing, wherein like reference characative connection between the wire I8 and cover 40 ters indicate corresponding parts throughout 2 may nclude a e c k lever yi d y the several views: swung in one direction by a tension spring 20 and Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal having the adjacent end of the wire I8 secured 5 constructed in accordance with the present inlever I9. The bell crank lever I9 is suitably piv- 7 burner revealing position. adjacent side of the stove body, the other arm of Figure 2 is a fragmentary vertical transverse said bell crank lever bearing. against the under. section on line 22 of Figure 1; and side ,of the projecting arm I 4 on the movable Figure 3 is a view somewhat similar to Figure 2 member of the adjacent hinge of the burner top 50' taken on the plane of line 33 of Figure 1. Cover I2.
Referring in detail to the drawing, an embodi- The second-mentioned operative connection bewhich is located entirely "ilsoasto causeapullto i2, although balance the cover of the valves or control elements I. It will be notedthat the forward end portion of the Bowden wire element is directed laterally and inwardly toward and parallel with the rod 22 where the forward end portion of the external member II of said Bowden wire element is to the adiacent guide 24 as at 25. Thus, proper reciprocation of rod 22 may be effected by corr I movement of wirell. It is preferred to mount the rod 2! inside the burner box or com artmen i on a plane slightly below the stems II, and for this purposetheguides 24 maybe tothe inner surface of the front wall of box or com- This invention accordingly provides valves or control elements 9- and within the burner box or co pt I and therefore completely concealed so as to not be unsightly or readily tampered with.
The actuating element or unit also includes up wardly projecting arms 2 rigid with the rod 12, and the stem ll of each burner control valvev or element 0 has a de rigid am 21 carrying a pin arrangedin the path of an am It of the rod 22, so that when'the wire ii is pulled to slide the rod 22 to the left of rigure 1, asis done when the latter, Asthe rod 2: will remain tion to which it is thus shifted.
burner top cover I! by. Thus, no jburner may be left on when the burner top cover l2'is closed, the very operation of closing such cover bringins about the tumburnerfwhich may have been lighted. Also, no burner may be turned on and/or become lighted while the coveri2 isclesed. to either permit objectionable escape of gas or oil-- iectionable burning of the cover It will be apparent, however, that when the cover is rod 22 will be shifted to the right of Figure 1 to the position shown in the latter ngure movedaway from the control elewhen it is considered that closing of cover. if
causes downward and rearward swinging of arm actuate the bell crank lever I! and be exerted on the wire shifting the rod 22 to the raising of cover positions thereof as illustrated in noiseless movement when shifted from the v or opened full line position of Figures 1 and 3 to the closed position as indicated by dotted lines in Figure 3.
-It will be apparent that the operative connection of one end of wire II with the cover I! may be considerably varied, and it will be likewise apparent that many different forms of connection may be provided between the rod 2 2 and the cover the preferred embodiment of the 'abell latter so as to present invention contemplates the use of both the Bowden wire'element ii, ll
ing unit including md 22. Various other changes and modifications will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope ofthe invention as claimed. what I claim as new is:
1. In combination, a burner top, a cover for said burner top hinged at its rear edge for vertical swinging movement, an arm rigid with and from said cover at an angle to the assume a substantially vertical when the cover is lowered substantially horizontal forwardly p iecting position engaging the under side of said burner top to limit the upward swinging movement of the cover when the latter is raised, a bell crank lever pivoted directly beneath the burner top and having upwardly diverging for ward and rear arms, the rear arm of crank lever extending in the path of said. firstnamed arm for actuation by the latter when the cover. is'lowered, and means to connect the forward arm of said bell crank lever to an element to be actuated.
2. In combination, a burner top, a cover for said burner top hinged at tical swinging movement, an arm rigid with and projecting from said cover at an angle to the latter so as to assume a substantially depending position when the cover is lowered and 'a substantially horizontal forwardly proiecting position engaging the under side of said burner top to limit the upward swinging movement of the cover when the latter is crank lever pivoted directly beneath the burner top and having upwardly diverging forward and rear arms, the rear arm of said bell crank lever extending in the path of said firstnamed arm for actuation by the latter when the cover is lowered, means to connect the forward arm of said bell crank lever to an element to said bell crank lever in a engagement of lever with said first-named arm and to counterbalance the cover when the latter. is raised.
3. In combination, a burner top, a cover. for said burner top hinged at its rear edge for vertical swinging movement, an arm rigid with and projecting from said cover at an angle to the assume a substantially vertical dependingposition when the cover is lowered and a substantially horizontal forwardly projecting position engaging the under side of said burner limit the upward swinging movement of the cover lever pivoted directly beneath the burner-top .and having upwardly'diverging forward and rear arms, the rear arm of said bell crank lever expath of said first-named arm for cover is lowthe cover is lowered.
