ATTORNEY Patented Oct. 10, 1944 UNlTED STATES PATENT OFFICE FURNACE CONSTRUCTION 7 James P. Tuck, San Anselmo, Calif.
Application May 16, 1941, Serial No, 393,746
4 Claims. (01. 126-116) This invention relates to furnaces, and is concerned more particularly with the floor or wall furnaces and the provision of means therein providing for easy access to a burner to be lighted, such as a pilot light burner.
It is an object of the invention to provide accessible means for removing the cover to a floor furnace combustion chamber to permit access to a burner therein.
Another object of the invention is to provide a cover removing device in furnaces of the character referred to which is normally located in an accessible but out of the way position,
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description of certain preferred embodiments thereof, as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a vertical sectional view through a furnace installation embodying the invention, certain parts being shown in elevation;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary, enlarged view similar to Figure 1 showing in dotted lines the operating positions of the cover removing attachment.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view of a modified form of the invention.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, the furnace construction includes a casing H] which is suitably installed in the floor portions Ila and Nb of adjacent rooms which are separated by an upright partition or wall l2. Suitably mounted within the casing is a heating unit [3, which includes a combustion chamber and a gas burner for the same. The cold air inlets to the furnaces are supplied by respective grills Ma and Mb. Grills Ma and Mb may be formed integrally and are removably seated or otherwise securing in the casing In in the plane of the floor.
To provide the hot air outlets, respective grills Mia and lBb are provided in a framework l1 disposed in a cut out portion of the wall l2 and suitably mounted on the casing Ill. Outlet grills We and l6b extend upwardly in the two rooms along opposite faces of the wall [2. A swinging flap or damper I8 is pivoted at Isa in the framework The damper l8 may be used to direct the hot air to both or either of the hot air outlets l6a or IE1).
A suitable partition [9 may be provided within the casing III to direct the cold air downwardly and then up over the heating unit [3 before passing to the hot air outlets.
The upper wall l3a of the heating unit I3 is provided with a collar or extension 2| (Figures 1 and 2) forming an opening which is normally closed by a cap or cover 22. Cover 22 has a transparent top 23 of some suitable material, such as Pyrex. By displacing the cover 22, access may be had to the pilot burner, which normally can be viewed through the grill lEb as indicated by the line 24.
To make possible removal of the cap 22 without removing the grill I62), I provide elements attached to the cap and which are accessible for operation from the front of the grill. As suitable means for this purpose the cap is provided with a bail 26 which is connected by a flexible element such as a chain 21, with an operating rod 28 extending through a slot 29 in the frame I! and having a handle 30.
With reference to Figure 2, it will be seen that by tilting the rod 28 to its dotted line position, the bail 26 is swung upright with chain 2! taut so that further movement of the rod 28 will lift the cap 22. Then the cap can be swung to one side and dropped upon the top wall [3a, while a suitable igniting device such as a match carrying rod is lowered to the burner. After lighting the burner cap 22 is replaced in the same manner. In its normal inoperative position, the cap lifting means is in an accessible yet an out of the way location as seen in Figure l.
The embodiment shown in Figure 3 is generally similar to that disclosed above, but the type of furnace shown is an ordinary floor furnace in which both the intake and outlets for cold and hot air respectively are provided by a grill 3| mounted in the floor. In this instance, the cover 22 on the casing l 3a has attached thereto a chain 21a also connected to an operating rod 28a having a handle 30a and extending through an aper tured portion 32 of the grill 3|.
I claim:
1. In a furnace having a casing beneath the.
floor of the room, and a heating unit in said casing, said casing having a cold air intake grill and a hot air grill, an opening in the top wall of said unit providing access to a burner therein, a removable cover for said opening having a transparent top permitting viewing of said burner through said opening with the cover in place, and means for removing and replacing said cover including a rod seated in said hot air grill at a marginal portion thereof and laterally of said removable cover with its handle positioned to be accessible from the room, and a flexible connection from said cover to the inner end of said rod, whereby said rod and flexible connection are normally disposed out of' the line of c sight to said cover.
2. In a furnace having a casing beneath the floor of the room, and a. heating unitiin said casing, a burner in said unit, said casing having a cold air intake grill and a hot air grill; 'an
opening in the top wall of said unit providing access to said burner, a removable cover for a said opening having a transparent top permitting viewing of said burner through l-saidopening with the cover in place, a bail pivoted to said cover,
a rod loosely suspended from an aperture at a. marginal portion of one of said grills at a point above and to one side of said cover whereby said rod'is normally disposed out of the line-of-'sight within said aperture portion to place the lower end of said rod over said cover and a link conto the pilot burner thereofia transparent re- I movable cover for said opening, and means for removing and replacing said transparent cover including a rod normally suspended from said register at a point lateral to said cover, a flexible 7 connection between saidrod and said cover, and
1 5 to said cover, said .rod being capable of tilting nection between said rod and said bail whereby said cover may be raised by operation of said rod.
.3. In "a "furnace having -a combustion unit mounted in l an iinaccessible .p'osition, T351101, "air registenan .opening -in.saidzuniti providing access a handle on said rod seated in'an accessible position on said register, all of said elements except said handle being normally concealed by said register and out of thelline-lof sight tofisaid 4. In a 'furnace havinga combustion mounted in an inaccessible position and a hot" air register, an opening in said unit providing access thereto, a removable transparent coverfor said opening, and a fiexible means for operating said cover extending therefrom through said register at a-portion located above and laterally of said cover and having thereon a handle adapted to be located'in an accessible position onlsaid register, .said flexible means being normally disposeduout "of theline :of sighttto'l'said cover. 7
