Description
No. 768,037. PATENTED AUG. 23, 1904;
- T. J. FEARNS.
GARMENT HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 11, 1903- NO MODEL.
T llamas J. Farns, fnveniar UNITED STATES Patented August 23, 1904.
THOMAS J. FEARhlS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
GARMENT-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 768,037, dated August 23, 1904.
Application filed June 11, 1903.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. FEARNS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New 'York, in the county and State of New York,
which are designed to be used in connection with a belt and adapted to hold the wearers waist and skirt in fixed positions relative to each other.
The objects of the invention are to provide such a device which will hold the garments firmly, but so gently as to obviate danger of tearing or other injury, which will be simple in construction and operation, which will be" inexpensive, and which will lend itself readily to ornamentation in any desired degree.
To these ends it consists in the novelrfeatures and combinations hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring now to the drawings for a clear understanding of my invention, Figures 1 and 2 show the device with the hinged member in different positions. Fig. 3 is asection showing the holder in use.
The preferred embodiment of my invention consists of two members 1 2, hinged together in any convenient manner, so as to be capable of angular movement relative to each other, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. On the outside of leaf 1 are devices for engaging a beltas, for example, loops 3 4 -througl1 which the belt 9 passes. These loops may obviously be ornamented, if desired. On the inside of the. leaf or member 1 is secured a layer 5, of material adapted to have considerable friction with cloth. I prefer to use corrugated rubber for this purpose, with parallel ribs or other projections arranged as shown.. The rubber is fastened in place by crimping the edge of the plate over it, as at 6, or in any other suitable way. The adjacent face of the other plate, 2, may be left smooth, but is preferably stamped or otherwise given the projections 7 8 to coact with the corrugations on 'such strains.
Serial No. 160,971. (No model.)
the other. On the back of leaf 2 is also a piece ,of ribbed rubber similarly secured in place.
Fig. 3 shows clearly the method of using the device. The leaf 2 is placed between the waist 10 and the skirt-band 11, and the leaf 1, carryingthe belt 9, folded down over the band in the position of the view referred to. The belt is now extended around the waist and: secured with the desired degree of tightness, thus pressing the corrugations of leaf 2 firmly against the garment 10, and the other leaf with equal firmness against the skirtband 11. When thus arranged, it will be found impossible to disturb the relative positions of the two garments by any strain to which they would ordinarily be subjected, and the friction-surfaces are of such considerable area that the garments will not be torn by The projections 7 8 coacting with the corrugated face 5 materially increase the grip at .those points.
While the form shown and described herein is the one I prefer, it should be understood,
of course, that the invention is capable of various other embodiments, and I therefore do not consider myself limited to that herein disclosed; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a device of the character described, in combination, a plate, 1, rigid loops on one face of the plate, a sheet, 5, of corrugated rubber on the other face, a second plate, 2, hinged loosely to the first at one edge and adapted to fold down against the corrugated face of the other, corrugations 7, 8, on the contiguous face of the second plate adapted to coact with the corrugated rubber on the other plate, a sheet of corrugated rubber on the other face of the second plate, and a belt extending through the loops in thefirst plate, whereby the pressure of the belt alone causes [the garments engaged by the corrugated faces to be firmly held in position, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
THOMAS J. FEARNS.
