SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 767,455, dated August 16, 1904.

To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, EVANDER M. UssERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Littles Mills, in the county of Richmond and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Reiillable Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of devices commonly known as non-refillable bottles, and provides a novel construction of guard means securing the operating-valve governing the outflow of the liquid in the neck of the bottle. The guard is of sectional construction and is compressible, being' made of a yielding or resilient material, so as to engage with thc neck of the bottle and afford an interlocking connection between the neck and the guard.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for elfecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and drawings hereto attached.
Vhile the essential and characteristic features of the invention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view throughv the upper portion of a bottle having the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the position of the guard and valve upon immersion of the bottle to cause outiiow of the liquid therefrom. Fig. 3 is a combined view of the yielding section of the guard and the valve operatively connected therewith. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a rigid section of the guard.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The bottle 1, as regards the construction of the body thereof, is of any ordinary type, a neck 2, however, being' somewhat modified to provide an annular enlargement 8, forming an offset or groofved engaging portion 4. upon the inner periphery of the said neck. The enlargement 3 is formed in the manufacture of the bottle and constitutes engaging means cooperating with the yielding section 5 of the guard. Ashereinbefore mentioned,the guard is of peculiar form, being constructed in two sections 5 and 6. The section 5 is formed of yielding compressible materialsuch as cork, rubber, or the likeand is provided with an annular enlargement 7, which engages the annularly-grooved portion 1 of the neck of the bottle. The section 6 of the guard is of rigid material, such as metal, and is secured to the section 5 by means of fastenings 8, which are passed through the respective sections and headed at opposite ends to secure the parts 5 and 6 together. A metallic disk 9 is disposed upon the under side of the yielding section 5, so that the headed portions of the fastenings 8 may be engaged therewith, and thus more firmly hold the sections together. An opening 10 in the rigid section 6 admits of the outflow of the contents of the receptacle 1, .and a Valve 11 is mounted intermediate thesections 5 and 6 of the guard and adapted for movement in such position. The under side of the section 6 of the guard is recessed, as shown at 12. to form a space within which the valve 11 is movable. The valve 11 is provided with guide-legs 13, projected from the under side thereof, which legs are received by the opening 14., provided in the yielding section 5 of the guard, the valve being adapted to close down upon the Lipper side of the section 5 adjacent the opening 14. therein, to thereby normally close the said opening and prevent introduction of the liquid or the like within the bottle after the original contents thereof have been removed. To space the valve 11 from the under side of the rigid section 6 of the guard when the bottle is inverted and admit of passage of the contents from the receptacle, lugs 15 extend from the upper side of the valve and serve in the capacity before stated.
Aclosure, such as a cork 16,is disposed above the guard in the usual manner, and the receptacle may be sealed in any suitable way. As the bottle is in an upright position the valve 11 is normally closed and upon tilting of the bottle said valve readily opens, moving to- IOO ward the opening 10 in the rigid section of the guard, and the contents of the receptacle pass around the valve and out of the neck in the usual manner. ln placing the guard in position in the neck of the bottle after the contents thereof have been placed therein the said guard is forced into the neck 2 and as soon as the enlarged portion 7 of the yielding section 5 arrives adjacent the annular enlargement 3 the enlargement of the guard springs outwardly, being of course flexible, and engaging the neck is efectually locked in position, preventing removal of the guard without mutilation thereof.
A guard-plate 2() is secured to the upper side of the metal section of the guard and prevents tampering' with the valve by the introduction of a tool into the neck of the bottle for fraudulent purposes.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new isln a bottle or like necked receptacle, the combination with a neck provided with an annular enlargement forming an annular groove upon the inner periphery thereof, an antireilling-closure comprising an upper rigid section and a lower leXible or resilient section, the upper rigid section being provided upon its lower side witha recess, the sections of the closure being provided with outlet-openings therethrough, a valve arranged intermediate the sections aforesaid and movable in the recessed portion of the rigid section, said valve being' provided with lugs projected from the upper side thereof to engage the rigid section, guide-legs depending from the valve and movable within the opening' of the liexible section, and a guard-plate arranged upon the sectional closure aforesaid.
