Description

PATENTED AUG. 2, 1904 W. S. FOSTER.
CRIB BED.
APPLIUATION FILED MAY 9, 1903 NO MODEL.
@www l El ZWMLLHZQj/KW FOS'TEW;
lierre` diri-eres WILLIAM S. FSTER, OF UTICA, NEWT YORK, SSIGTQR l) FO MFG.V CO., OF ULIC, NEW YORK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 766,236, dated August 2, 3.90%.
Application filed Mey 9,1903. Serial No. 166,324. (No model.)
.To @ZZ Loh/m, it may concern:
Beit known that i, VILLIAM S. FOSTER, of Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, ha e invented certain new end useful improvements in Crib-Beds; and l do here by declare that the following is n full, clear,
end exact description of the invention, which will ennhle others skilled in the art to which it apperteins to ineke and use the seme, referto ence being lied to the accompanying drawings, and tothe numerals ot' reference marked thereon, which i'orm part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide e childs crib or hed having vertically-movable i 5 sides, which -are mounted so as to be well supported and yet freely movable. Q y
A further object is to provide a construction of crib which permit-s the application of verticnlly-rnovnhle sides. y
ln the drawings, Figure i shows ev perspective View of n crib embodying` the features of my invention, with one of the sides in its upper position and one in its lower or open position. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail showing one of the posts employed in the construction, .together with the slide on which tho crib side is mounted. Fig. 3 is n detail showingl the mounting; oi' the upper end ot the slide or guide-rod, in connection with e pivoted catch or hook for securing' the side in its upper position. Fig'. 4 shows a plan viewof the parte shown in Fig. 3. Figs. 5 and 6 show side and edge views, respectively, of said hook or catch. Fig. 7 shows details of the middle support of the guide-rod for the Vmovable sides. Fig. 8 shows n plan view of the same. Fig'. 9 shows a plan View, and Fig'. l() a side elevation, of the lower bracket or support for the guide rod. Fig. ll shows, partially in plan view and partially in section, details of the corner-- fastener employed in the construction. Fig. 12 shows a plan view of the post part of the said corner-fastener.
Referring to the reference-figures in n more particular description, l indicates the headframe and 2 the foot-trame of the crib each of which includes the cornerposts 3. On'tlie post 3 there are provided the inwardly-projecting post-pieces et, which carry -on their projecting' ends the button-heed pron jection o. The hed or mattress bottom is provided with u freine consisting; ot end ours 7 and side rnils 8. I To the freine is attached the rail or treme member oi' the corner-testener 9, having shoulders adapted to cngnge with seid header. projection By mnploying the inwnrdly-prejecting or oilset corner-faisteners i on the post the side re 5l ot' the mattress-frame muy be brought ide oi' the treck-iine between the posts ol" the bend and foot frames. lhe crih is provided on either side with vertically-sliding` sides id in t unture ofgatcs. For supper-tin, hose s.V es et either end there are provided vertical guiderods 11. rllhe gi1icle-i'ods l1 n'uimnted :it euch end in brackets ll? und i8 the upper and lower ends of the posts, respectively and projecting from the post toward the op posite end of the hed. '.lhcre also gro vided for the guide-rod il u middle support .1d in the nature oi c bracket secured to and projecting` over the side of the post 3. The bracket or support li is provided with en elongated openingil therein, through which the rod il passes und which allows ns-idernble freedom of movement lengthwise of the bed-bottom, but secures the rod against lateral or transverse movement. The side i() engage the rod il by means of 10i" 10D., The upper one of these eng'. tion of the rod 1l which is between the top bracket lf2 :1nd the middle support li., .vhilc the lower eye engages between the middle support lei :ind the lower bracket 3.3. For supporting the sides in their upper or closed positiop there nre`provided gravity hooks or catches 15. These are pivoted on the ends of the brackets 1Q and are provided with e. counter-weight l5, adapted to throw them into closed position, which is a substantially 'rerticnl position. in order to limit the swingingl movement of the catches l5, there isprovided on the catch e shoulder l5", adapted to engage on n suitable shoulder on the end .of the bracket 12. Wlhon the crib side is raised to its elevated position, it is caught and held oy the automatic;operation of the catches 15. It is in the upper position that the sides l0 are more particularly in use, or in position to perform the oi'iiee for which they are intended. in their upper position they are particularly subject to the strain of being forced outwardly, particularly at theii outer side. ln order to withstand this strain eifectually, the middle support la for the rod l1 becomes quite necessary. ln the manufacture of beds and cribs in practice the work is quite roughly and inaceuratelyformed, and the posts at opposite ends, too, are quite prone to notbe exnctlypnrallel. ln employing a vertically-sliding side sufficient form must be allowed in the eyes 10 and l0" on the ends of the sides to obviate as fer as possible any tendency to point. ln addition to this it is found necessary to provide in the support 14 the elongated opening' 14 shown, which will allow a certain amount of spring to the r`od ll in a directionlengthwise of the bed. vBy allow- ,ing' the rod to spring thus in 'the middle the tendencyI to pinch and point the sides and prevent their free vertical self-movement is to a large extent obviated, while the support against late ai pressure is maintained.
'l'o lower the sides ot the crib, the catches l d, when the crib side will drop down or can be forced down into its lowe:I
position. rihe arrangement of parts is pret'- erably such that in its lower position the upper edge of the crib side will project some- 2 what above the piane. of the bed-bottom 6, serving to prevent displacement of any mattress or bedding on the bed-bottoni.
VV hat l claim as new, and desire-to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination in a crib-bed of a mattressframe and head and foot frames including posts et the corners attached to said mattressframe, ot' vertical guide-rods extending parallel with the posts above and below the plane of the mattress-frame, supporting-brackets from the post for the upper and lower ends and middle ot' said guide-rods, a gravity-catch pivoted on the said upper bracket, verticallysliding sides having bearings on said guiderods between the upper and middle bracket and the middle and lower brackets, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof -I have affixed my signature, in presence or' two witnesses, this 30th day of April, 1903.
