Description
N. FETERS, PMOT HER, WASHINGTON D C i UNITED STATES lPATENT OFFICE.
J ULIUS WERNER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVED SOFA-BEDSTEA D.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 76,15 70, dated April 7, 1868.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ULIUs WERNER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have iuvented a new and Improved Sofa-Bedstead; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ot' this specification, in which- Figure l represents a planor top view of my improved sofa. Fig. 2 is a plan or top View of the same when converted into a bed. Fig. 3 is a verticaltransverse section of the sofa, taken on the plane of thelinem, Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section of the bed, taken on the plane of the line y y, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail longitudinal section of the sofa, taken on the plane of the lineh h, Fig. l. Fig. 6 is a detail end View of the bed. Fig. 7 is a detail top view of the head or foot rest of the sofa. Y
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new sofa, which is so arranged thatits seat can be folded out and that its back can be folded into the place of the original seat, so that thereby a bed-bottom of double the width ot' the original sofa-seat can beobtained.
The head and foot rests of the sofa are each made ot'two longitudinal parts, that are hinged together at the outer end, one of them being fixed to the sofa-frame, while the other can be folded out, so that the th us-prolon ged rest may reach entirely across the bed-bottom, to be the rest of the same. i
A in the drawings represents the frame of a sofa, said frame consistingl of end and back pieces, and of an open front piece, through which a drawer, B, can be tted.
O is the seat of the sofa, hinged'to the front edge of the frame A, so that it can be folded out, as in Fig. 4, or turned in, as in Fig. 3. Both faces of the seat O are therefore cushioned in suitable manner.
When the seat is turned out, as in Figs. 2 and 4, the drawer B must be pulled out so as to support the outer part of the seat, as shown.
D represents the back of the sofa. The same is hinged with its lower end to the back of the frame A. When the seat is folded out the back can vbe turned down, as in Figs. 2 and 4, and will then rest upon the frame A, as in l Figs. 2 and 4, occupying then the same place Which the seat occupied before it was folded out. Both faces of the back are therefore cushioned, at least that one which forms part of the bed-bottom; or, instead of the cushions, both the bed-surfaces of the seat and back may have straps or other devices generally used on bed-bottoms. l
The lower edge of the back D has lugs or a flange, a, which fits behind the frame A, to hold the back in an upright position when desired.
E E are the head and foot rests of the sofa. Each of them consists of two pieces, b and c, of which one, b, is rruly secured to the sofaframe, while the other, c, is hinged to the front end of b, as is clearly shown in Fig. 7.
When the seat O and back D are folded out to forni a bed-bottom, as in Figs. 2 and 4, the portion c ot' each rest is turned out also, so as to come over the end of the seat G, and the thus-lengthened head and foot rests are fitted across the entire bed, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2.
By means of a suitable cushion, F, the rests E of the sofa may be covered, as is clearly shown in Figs. l and 5, and the same cushions bed, so as to forni pillows, as shown in Fig. 2. By means of suitable stops, al d, the parts c of the rests E can beheld in the desired positions.
The sheets and covers ofthe bed can be put into the drawer B when the device is drawn together as a sofa.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combina-tion ot' the back D, upholstered upon both sides and hinged at the base, with the seat C, upholstered upon both sides and hinged at the front edge, and adapted to be folded out to give place to the back D when folded down, substantially as, described and specified.
2. In combination with the frames O and D, arranged as above, the extension head and foot rests E E, all made. and operating substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The frame A, double-cushioned seat G, and folding back D, and extension head and foot rests E, in combination with the coverin g-cushions F, as herein described, for the purpose specified.
