PATENT GEEICE.
DEVICE FOR ERADICATING FACIAL WRlNKLES-' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 765,361, dated. July 19, 1904.
Application filed November 12, 1903. Serial No. 180,907. (No model.)
To 0064 w/wm it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. HARGRAvE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Colfax, in the county of Whitman and State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Device for Eradicating Facial Wrinkles, of
- which the following is a specification.
' by the, continued use of the device.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which may be applied before going to bed and may be worn during sleep without inconvenience to the wearer.
A further object of theinvention is to provide a device of the charater described which may be employed for the prevention anderadication of wrinkles without in any way interfering with the circulation of the blood in the superficial tissues of the face by undue pressure thereon.
In describing the invention reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Ihave shown the device as applied, it being understood that the exact form and proportions of the parts exhibited ay be varied to suit individual cases without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is substantially a profile view of the head and face of a woman wearing the device. Fig. 2 is a full-face view of a woman wearing the device. Fig. 3 is a view of the complete device when not in use.
Referring to the drawings, in which corresponding parts are designated by similar characters of reference, 1' designates a piece of flexible material of any suitable charactersuch, for example, as surgeons adhesive plaster or linen provided with a coating of any preferred adhesiveeach piece 1 being pref erably of substantially the form shown, comprising relatively broad end portions 2 and a narrow intermediate portion 3, the end portions being so disposed that when applied to the side of the users face, as shown, one of the end portions will project forward and downward toward the chin and the other project forward and upward toward the forehead. At the rear margin of each piece of material 1 and near the ends thereof are attached two hooks 4 or any other preferred form of fastening device. If the hooks are employed, rings 5 will be provided in the ends of straps 6 for engagement with the hooks, and the straps 6 will be constructed in the form of loops having slides 7, by means of which the length of the loops may be varied to suit the convenience of the wearer. The straps 6 are attached to a ring 8, which is fastened in the end of a head-strap 9, formed, preferably, of elastic webbing and consisting of a section 10, bearing a buckle, and a section 11, adapted for engagement with the buckle.
For the eradication or prevention of wrinkles about the mouth and below the eyes an apparatus consisting merely oftwo of the pieces 1, adapted for engagement with opposite sides of the face, a head-strap 9, and the devices described for connecting the headstrap with the pieces 1 is suflicient. If, however, it is desired to make use of the device for removing or preventing wrinkles in the forehead, a piece 12 of fabric of cresent shape is provided for attachment to the upper portion of the forehead, and the piece 12 is provided at the upper margin thereof and intermediate between the ends with a hook 13 or other suitable fastening device, with which engages an eye 14, secured in a loop formed sition upon the head and adjusted to the proper tension. The length of the straps 6 and of the head-strap 9 may be determined once for all, and after the pieces of fabric have been'attache'd to the skin the eyes 5 may be engaged with the hooks 4 upon one of the pieces 1 and the strap drawn across the back of the head and the eyes at the ends of the other straps 6 sprung over the hooks 4 upon the other piece of fabric 1 without disconnecting the sections 10 and 11 of the headstrap, as the elasticity of the skin is sufficient to allow such a course. Similarly the eye 14: may be sprung over the hook 13 without lengthening the strap 15 for the purpose.
By means of the device described the skin may be placed under any desired degree of tension, and by the frequent use of the device the tendency of the skin to become set in Wrinkles may not only be prevented, but the stretching of the skin by means of the device will lead to the restoration of the subcutaneous tissues to their original condition, and wrinkles that have been formed will be eradicated by the building up of the tissues beneath them.
I am aware that various devices have heretofore been employed for the purpose for which the present invention is intended; but so far as I am aware no one prior to my invention has made use of devices for stretching the skin at the seat of a wrinkle without subjecting it to pressure at the same time, and thereby interfering with the circulation of the blood. As free circulation aids very greatly to build up tissue, I have devised the means above described for placing the skin under tension without applying pressure at the seat of the wrinkle, and I am so enabled to eifect the development of the new tissue beneath the wrinkled skin more rapidly than when the Wrinkle-eradicating device is a mere smoothing apparatus which operates by pressing upon the skin at either side of a wrinkle and so diminishes the circulation in the loose tissues under the skin.
Another difference between the device above described and others for analogous purposes which have heretofore been devised lies in the fact that by means of this device the skin of substantially any portion of the face may be placed under tension, which is extremely difficult of accomplishment by any other means.
Having thus described the nature and use of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the class described, members adapted for attachment to the cheeks, adjustable connecting devices between the parts, a member to engage the forehead, and means for connecting all of the parts.
2. In a device of the class'described, members adapted for attachment to the cheeks, and a connection between said members comprising loops adjustable in length attached to said members at the upper and lower ends, and a strap passing across the back of the head and connected with all of said loops.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WVILLIAM B. HARGRAVE.
