I UNITED STATES Patented June 21, 1904.
CHARLES F. ZIMMERMAN, OF NAPER, NEBRASKA.
POLE ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 763,238, dated June 21, 1904.
Application filed October 28, 1903:
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. ZIMMERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Naper, in the county of Boyd and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pole Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments for poles of vehicles; and its object is to provide a device of simple and inexpensive construction which can be readily secured upon the pole of a vehicle and which serves to support said pole in the event of the breakage'of the neck-yoke, and which also prevents the yoke from slipping from the pole when a trace becomes detached.
The invention consists in providing a clamp which is adapted to be fastened to the pole of a vehicle and to which are secured oppositelyextending straps adapted to engage the collars of the harness.
The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved attachment upon the pole of a vehicle. Fig. 2 is aplan view of the clamp, and Fig. 3 is a section through a pole having my improved clamp thereon.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a vehicle-pole having a neckyoke 2 arranged thereon in the ordinary manner, and secured to the ends of this yoke are collars 3. Each collar is provided with a strap 4, having a ring 5, adapted to be engaged by a snap-hook 6, secured to one end of a strap 7. This strap is adapted to be inserted in slots 8 formed in flanges 9, which project Serial No. 178,871. -(No model.)
laterally from substantially semicylindrical plates 10. These plates are arranged at opposite sides of the pole l and are clamped thereon by means of bolts 11, which are adapted to be inserted in apertures formed within the flanges 9 adjacent the ends of the slots 8. When the plates 10 have been securely clamped upon the pole and the straps 7 fastened to the collars, it will be seen that should the neckyoke 2 become broken the pole 1 will be supported by the straps, and should one of the traces become detached the yoke 2 is prevented from slipping off the pole, as the strap 7 will hold it securely in position.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is The combination with a vehicle-pole having a yoke thereon, and collars connected to the yoke, of oppositely-arranged curved plates upon the pole, longitudinally-slotted flanges extended from the edges of the plates, said slots being adapted to register, means for clamping the flanges together whereby the plates are secured upon the pole, straps extending through the slots, a ring connected to each collar, and a securing device for detachably securing each strap to one of the rings.
In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES F. ZIMMERMAN.
