HARNESS ATTACHMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,825, dated February 13, 1894. Application filed September 19,1893. Serial No. 485,818- (No model.)

To all whom it may concern-.-

Be it known that we, EDWARD K. GRIESE- MER and JOHN H. MANGER, both of Readin in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in I-larness Attachments, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. v

Our invention relates toimprovements in harness attachments; and the object of our invention is to produce a simple means of attaching ahorse to the thills of a carriage, which means is especially adapted for a light harness such as is used on trotting horses, but which may also be applied to any ordinary harness.

A further object of our invention is to construct the apparatus in such a manner that it may be cheaply made, easily applied, and when adopted for use on a light harness for trotters dispenses with the breeching and traces, While when used with an ordinary harness it acts as a supplemental attachment to horse and thills.

To this end our invention consists of certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In our invention we employ a flexible clip 10, which is applied to each of the thills llto form'a connection with the harness, as hereinafter described, and the clip is at one end,

turns therein and by turning the thumb screw the free end of the screw may be adjusted so as to clamp the clipsecurely to the thill. The socket 13 is provided, near its inncr end and at one side, with a catch or pawl 16, which is secured toa spindle 17, this having its outer end shaped like an ordinary thumb screw so that it may be turned bythe fingers, and the pawl or catch may, by means of this spindle, be thrown back against the tension of the spring 18 which normally presses the pawl into engagement with the groove 19 in the lug 20, this lug being adapted to enter one end of the socket 13 and being formed integral with or rigidly secured to a plate 21, which plate is firmly riveted to the breast collar 22 which is extended beyond its usual length and is riveted, or otherwise firmly fastened, to the saddle 23. The pawl 16 automatically engages the lug 20 when the latter is pushed into the socket l3, and it will be seen that this forms a very easy and secure connection between the breast collar and shaft or thill, and that when the horse moves forward the strain comes on the lug and does not affect the pawl. When this arrangement above described is used, the vehi cured to snap hooks 26 which are arranged at the ends of the strap and are snapped into rings or keepers 27 which are securely fastened to the breast collar, one being secured to the collar near the front of the same and the other at a point opposite the saddle, and the plate 21 is fastened to the strap instead of to the collar, while the clip 10 engages the thill, as already described.

When the auxiliary device is used, as just described, it may be easily applied to the harness by simply snapping the hooks 26 into the rings 27 and if it is not desirable to use the attachment, it may be readily taken off.

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the breast collar of a harness and a thill of a vehicle, of a spring clip to clasp the thill, one member of the clip terminating in a socket and the other member projecting into the socket, a screw to adjust the free end of the clip, a lug on the breast collar adapted to enter the socket, and a catch in the socket to engage the lug, substantially as described.
