Be it known that I, NOAH D. SHIvEL,a citizen of the United States, residing at Iowa Falls, in the vcounty of Hardin and State of Iowa, have invented anew and useful Gate, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to gates, and has for its objects to produce an inexpensive device ot' this character of comparatively simple construction in which the gate may be readily converted to open and close by a longitudinal movement or rotation, as circumstances may require or choice elect, and one in which the gate will in either instance move freely andl smoothly and be sustained clear of the ground.
To these ends the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more full y hereinafter described.-
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a gate embodying my inventiom Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional plan of the turn-table. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 5 is a view similar to but viewed at right angles to Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a detail end View of one of the gates.
Referring to the drawings, 1 1 indicate the gate-supporting frames, disposed at opposite sides of the roadway in longitudinal alinement.
These frames, which are identical in construction, each comprise a pair of primary vertical posts `or standards 2, a rear secondary vertical post or standard 3, and an overhead track or rail 4, extending horizontally between and bolted or otherwise secured to the upper ends of the standards. The primary front standards 2, which in practice are spaced transversely of and receive the gate between them, are disposed one in rear of the other and connected at a point above and suitably remote from the groundby a connecting bar or niember 5. Sustained by each of the connecting-bars 5 is a turn-table comprising a fixed horizontallydisposedcircular member or base 6, bolted or otherwise secured to the bar, and a secondary rotary member 7, having in its lower face a circular socket or recess 8, which -receives a reduced portion or core 9, provided upon the primary base member. The socket 8 is surrounded by a vertically-depending flange 10, which bears at its lower end upon a horizontal flange 11, surrounding the reduced portion 9. Provided upon the upper tace of member 7 are' a pair of oppositely-disposed bearings 12, which receive thc axle ot' an antii'riction-roller 13, while at diametrically opposite points and at 'right angles to the axis oi' the roller there arises vertically from the member a pair of guide arms or members 14, bolted or otherwise secured at their lower ends to the member.

identical in construction and operation, and each consists ot' a front post16, a rear post 17, a top rail or bar 18, which projects somewhat in rear of the rear post, a diagonal brace 19, extended between the rear end of the top rail and the lower end of the post 17, and a pair oi' bottom bars or rails 2O 21, lying on opposite sides of and extended between the front and rear posts, the bar 21 being disposed somewhat above the bar .for the purpose which will presently appear. The top rail 18 is ot' substantially U shape in crosssection, thus producing a longitudinal guidechannel 22, which in practice receives the up- .per ends of the guide-lingers 14, while the lower edges of the side members oi' the rail travel upon the roller 13 and have their wearing-faces suitably shod with metal, as at 23. Each gate has bolted or otherwisefdetachably secured to its rear end for ready removal a pair of vertically-uprising plates 24, disposed on opposite sides of the track or rail 4 and constituting a bearing-frame in which is journaled a pair of vertically-spaced horizontal bearing-rollers 25 26, one situated above and the other below the said tra'ck 4, the upper of these rollers being provided with end iianges 27, designed to bear upon opposite sides of the track and prevent contact of the latter with the plates 24.
Disposed at the transverse center of the roadway at the point oi meeting of the gates when closed is a pair of blocks o1' members 28, spaced onefrom the other in a direction transversely of the gate to receive the front post 16 andthe bottom rails 2O between them,
thus sustaining the gates against lateral movenient, while one of the blocks receives upon its upper face the lower edge of rails 21, which, as before stated, is spaced somewhat above the ground in order that it may receive the block beneath it for supporting the outer end of the gate when closed.
29 designates a latch member, preferably in the form of a U-shaped metal strap, pivoted to the top rail of one of the gates and adapted to swing downward over a keeper 30 in the form of vertical pins arising from the top rail of the other gate.
In practice the gates when mounted as herein shown open and close by a longitudinal movement, at which time the top rail of the gate travels, as before stated, upon the roller 13, while the roller 25 travels upon the track 4. Thus the gate will move freely and at the same time be supported clear of the ground. During such movement the guide-arms 14, engaging the channel 22, serve to sustain the gate against lateral play, while said arms serve the further function of stops to limit the gate at the termination of its movements. If in practice it is found necessary or desirable for the gate to open by a swinging movement, the plates 24 may be readily detached, thus freeing the rear ends of the gate and permitting the latter to pivot freely upon the turn-table or rather allowing' the latter in turning to carry the gate with it, which action is insured by the arms 14 engaging in the channel 22.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I produce a device of simple construction which is admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in view. It is to be understood, however, that l do not limit myself to the precise details herein set forth, inasmuch as lninor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim isw 1. In a gate, the combination with a supporting-frame comprising` a pair oi' front spaced standards, a rear standard and a track sustained by the standards, of a turn-table supported between the front standards, a pair of guide-arms extending upward from the turntable, a bearing-roller journaled between the arms, a gate disposed for movement between the front standards and having a top rail provided with a guide-channel receiving` the arms, said rail being adapted for longitudinal travel upon the roller, a beariiig-frame. detachably secured to the rear end of the gate, and a bearing-roller journaled in the frame l'or travel upon the track.
2. In a gate, the combination with a supporting-frame, of a longitudinally-movalle gate sustained thereby and comprising front and rear end bars and a bottom rail, and a pair of spaced blocks designed to receive the lower end of the front bar between them when the gate is closed, the bottom rail being` spaced above ground to rest upon the upper face oi' one of the blocks.
