To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NEWTON K. BOWMAN, a citizen of the United States,residing at North Lawrence, in the county of Stark and State of 5 Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mine-Gates and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in mine-gates; and its object is to provide an improved gate of this character adapted to open automatically under the weight of a person or car and to close after the passage of said person or car therethrough by gravity; and to this end the invention consists in the novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a track-platform and gate embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section showing the gate closed; Fig. 3, a similar view showing the gate in open position; Fig. 4, a

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the platform-frame, whichis set into the trackbed and interposed in the line of the rails and comprises the longitudinal side sills 2,
connected at their ends and center by the cross-braces 3.
i represents the vertical parallel gate posts, rising from the sills 2 and connected at their upper ends by thetransverse bar 5 and braced by the diagonal brace or jamb bars 6.
Upon the base-frame are mounted two inclined tilting platforms 8 9, constituting two inclined planes having their highest portion at the center in line with the gate-posts, as shown. These platforms carry the tracln 5o rails 9, which are mounted upon the cross tie plates 10, said tie-plates having chairs or Serial No. 646,015. (No model.)
The gate 13 is provided with a transverse bottom or foot board 14, provided in its lower edge with slots 14: for the passage of the rails and in its upper edgewith a curved central recess 15; This bottom board is also provided with vertical slots 16 for passage ofset- 7 5 screws 17,which secure it to the gate and 1 whereby it may be adjusted relatively to the lower end of the gate to compensate for changes therein due to climatic influences, so
as to effectually close the gateway at all times. The gate is rigidly mounted upon a rock-shaft 1,8, journaled in bearings on the post i, and provided with a central downwardly-projecting oifset or crank extension 19, the lower end of which extends Within. the 8 5 recess 15 of the foot-board.
The gate is constructed, preferably, of inch boards placed vertically, and the offset 10, ex tended down to near the bottom thereof and there fastened by staples l9", stiffens the 0 door and also prevents the shaft from turning in the staples 18, by which it is fastened. This construction provides an increased leverage for the gate-lifting mechanism, which enables theeasy lifting of the gate at all 5 times notwithstanding its increased weight when water-soaked or the gateway being choked by coal, coal-dust, c. The ends of the rock shaft are projected beyond the gate posts and provided with eccentric-heads 20. 10c Link chains 21, connected with the projecting ends 10 of the tie-plate 10, fit over the curved faces of these eccentrics, and the links of these chains are adapted to engage hooks or pins 22 on the plane faces of said heads, whereby said chains may be adjusted to vary the throw of the gate and platforms, as will be readily understood.
The operation is as follows: When a person walks upon one of the platformsthe platform 9, for instanceor a car rolls upon the rails thereon, the weight of said person or car will depress and cause both platforms to tilt or sag down at the center to a horizontal position until the tie-plates rest upon the stops 23. This will draw on the chains 21, which will actuate the rock-shaft, and the gate mounted thereon will open, as shown in Fig. 3, and will remain open until said person or car has passed over the platform 8, when the gate will close by its own gravity and restore the platforms to their normal position. This operation the gate will readily perform under all ordinary conditions, but in order to insure positive operation of the parts I have provided the gate with counterbalancing means whereby its leverage may be increased when the platforms are Watersoaked or clogged. To this end I provide the gate with a vertical rod 24:, on which slides a counterbalancing-weight 25, having an eccentric-head 27, connected with the red by a link' 28, a slot 29 to receive the rod, and a handle or thumb-piece 30 for operating it. 'lhe-eccentric-head of the weight is adapted to bind against the rod to hold said weight in position thereon. The gate when closed abuts against the brace or jamb bars 6, and stands diagonally or at an incline relatively to the gate-posts 4, and has but a limited movement in closing and unelosing.
Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the parts of my invention, I do not desire to be confined to the same, but reserve to myself the right to make such changes and modifications as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of} my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-
1. In gates, the combination of the two inclined depressible platforms, gate-posts, a gate or door a connection between the gate and platforms, a vertical slide on said gate, and a counterbalancing-weight adjustably mounted on said slide, substantially as de-- scribed.
2. 1 In gates of the class described, the combination with a base-frame, of two tilting platforms mounted thereon each consisting of a rectangular frame, metallic cross-tie plates 10 connecting the said bars of said frame and provided with the integral chairs or seats 11, the inner tie-plate 1O on one platform being formed with the integral lateral arms 1O extending under the other platform, track-rails fitted in said chairs or seats, a platform supported on said cross-ties, posts rising from the base-frame, a vertically-swinging gate mounted thereon, and a connection between said platforms and gate, substantially as described.
3. In gates, the combination of the two inclined depressible platforms, gate-posts at the point of junction of said platforms,a gate, a rock-shaft to which said gate is hung provided at the center with a downwardly-proj ecting offset extending to near the lower end of the gate and at each end with an eccentrichead, and chains connected with one of said platforms an d adj ustably connected with said eccentric-heads, substantially as described.
4. In gates, the combination of the two inclined depressible platforms, gate-posts at the point of junction of said platforms, a vertically-tilting gate, a connection between the gate and platforms, a vertical rod on said gate, and a counterbalancing-weight sliding on said rod, said weight provided with an cecentric-head having a link connection with said rod and adapted to bind thereon, a slot in line withsaid head, and a handle or t-h u mbpiece, substantially as described.
