To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. ANDER- son, alcitizen of the United States, residing at "Hamilton, in the county of Butler and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Switches, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in switches for railway rails. s
In carrying out myinvention, I propose toprovide an arrangement of rails wherein no gap will be left at the points where the of. the rails.
rolling stock travels either from the main line to a side line, or from the side line to the main line, and which will obviate the shock and jar usually occasioned by. thewheels of the rolling stock,passing over the gap in the rails or uneven surfaces at the switch I also propose to provide a rail structure wherein theswitch points will belreceived in suitable recesses in the rails with which they abut so that no shoulder to. provide the rails upontheir inner faces with slots or openings toflreceivethe ends or projecting surface will be offered tothe wheelsof. the rolling stoclc;
It is still a further object iof the invention ofswitch points, the saidiopenings having rail filler plates which are lslidable therein and which are adapted to be alternatelyand automatically broughtto the surface of either of the rails to fill thegap caused by the opening in either of the rails after one of. a pair of switch points has been moved to have its endgreceived; within. the gap or opening of the second or opposite rail.
With the above objects in view, and others which will appear asthe nature of themvention is more fully understood, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and operation of parts set forth in the following description and falling within the scope of the appendedclaims.

. 90 Arranged within each of the depressions 1 beams or ties l0 and 11 are slotted upon their inner faces adjacent their ends to provide for the reception therebetween ofthe filler plates and also to properly arrange the inner faces of the said ties or beams to receive the pivots of the rocker members 9.. Two of the rocker members are pivoted for each of the filler plates 6, and the concaved edges of all of the rocker members are disposed toward the upper faces of the ties, and,"as will be understood, each pair of the rocker members are disposed diametrically opposite each other.
Connected with the ties 10 and 11 below the portions thereof-upon which'the rails rest, are bearing plates 12 and 13respectively,jand these plates have their upper faces each formed with apair of spacedde- Q pressionslat, the depressions upon one of the plates being disposed diametrically opposite the depressions of the second plate. Thesedep'ressions are adapted toserve as guideways for transversely arranged bars, 15 and 16, provided upon a sliding frame 17. The ends of the bars 15 and 16 have connected thereto, upon their upper faces, filler plates supporting blocks 18 and 119 respectively. The bloc s18 19 are of a thickness equaling the distance between the upper I edges of the plates '6 and the upper faces of the heads of the rails. The blocks 18 and 19 have their inner faces inclined downwardly toward the base bars 15 and 16, as indicated by the numerals 20, while the bar 15 is provided with vertically disposed studs 21 and 22 respectively, each of the said studs being spaced a slight, but suitable distance from the respective blocks 18 and 19. The plates, 6 are arranged to have their lower ledges contacted by the beveled edges 20 of the blocks 18 and 19, when the frame 17 is moved longitudinally so that one of the said filler plates 6 will be guided by the said inclined wall 20 to the .top and bearing face proper of the block, and so support the plate in a proper position when the same fills the gap or opening in the rail and is'disp'osed flush with the top of the'head ofthe rail. In this connection it should be stated that the blocks 18 and 19 are so spaced upon the frame 17 as to permit one of the said blocks supporting one of'the filler plates 6 to hold thesame flush with the rail, as'just set forth, while the second block will have moved with the frame a distance suflicient'to permit the second plate gravitating below the plane of the upper surface of the second rail.
The numerals 2st and 25 designate the movable switch points, which, in -the present instance are connected'through the medium of rectangular plates26' and 26 secured to the inner base flanges of the points. The
points are, of course, arranged between the or inclined in the usualinanner, so that the inclined sides of the rail switchpoints will 1 contact with the opposite rails, but, in the ilower faces or base' portions are provided with longitudinally extending, integrally 5 formed bosses which provide, what I term, rocker actuating members 29. The outer ends of the actuating members terminate a suitable distance from the base portions of the switch points, so that the ends of the base proper ofythesaid switch points will rest upon the tie or beam 11, and the actu- Zating members 29 are of a length approxim'ately equal or slightly less than the distance between the ties or beams 10 and 11, so
:that the said members project downwardly betweenthe said beams and are each re- :ceived upon one pair of the rocker members :9 and disposed each adjacent one of the 'studs21 and 22 respectively.
Suitable means is provided switch points, a rod R, connected with an operating lever L being illustrated in the drawings to accomplish this purpose, but,
for throwing a of course, any other suitable actuating mem-' bers may be employed. j
The operation of the device may be briefly described as follows: We will suppose that the side line is open, as shown in Fig. 2,-and' I it is desired to close the side line andopenthe main line" as shown in Fig. '1 of the "drawings. The lever Lis thrown outwardly which causes the actuating member 29 of the switch point 25 to contact with the stud 21- and moves the frame 17 in thedirection of the lever L. The actuating member 29 also engages with the rockers 9 to tilt the'said rockers to cause the same, through the me dium of the links 8, to move the plate 6 vertically to fill the slot 3 and to position the block 18, which has been'moved by the frame 17, to underlie and support the said plate 6. Simultaneously with this action the actuating member 29 of the switch point 24 has moved upon the rocker members 9 connected with the links 8 of the filler plate 6 of the rail nearest the lever L, to move the said .filler plate downward of the slot 3, the supporting block 19 having been moved with the frame 17 from below the said filler plate, to permit of the switch point 2% being received within the said slot 3. By swinging nection with the" drawings the simplicity and the advantages of the device will, it is thought, be perfectly understood by those skilled in the art to which such inventions appertain without furthendetailed description. i v i Having thus described my invention what I claimis 1. In combination, two rails, each of said rails having their inner faces slotted, filler members within the slots, switch points between the rails, means for operating the switch points to permit oneof the said points being received within the slot of one, of the ra ls, and mechanism operated by the moving switchpointsfor elevating one of the filler members to fill thespace provided by theslot in the second rail. r a

ment of the switch points for alternately raising-and lowering one of the filler blocks to fill the gap provided by the depression when the second gap is occupied by the end of one of the switch points. i

In combination, mainwrails and side rails, and switch pointsbetween the main and side rails, the main rails having their inner faces depressed, filler plates vertically movable within the depressions, means actuated by a movement of the switch points for alternately raising one ofthe switch points to fill the gap provided one of the depressions and to lower the second filler plate when the depression provided therefor is occupied by one ofthe switch points.

In combination, main rails and side rails, and connected switch points between, the main and side rails, the inner faces of v the main rails having their heads andbase flanges provided with longitudinal depressions, their webs enlarged and, terminating in a plane with the end walls provided by v the depressions, the said web enlargements having their outer faces formed with lips which extend within the gap provided by the a depressions, vertically movable plates a-within the depressions andengaged by the lips oi. the web enlargements,means for thron ing the switch points to bring the end of one of the said points to within the depression of one of the rails above one of the plates, and mechanism operated by the switch points for raising the plate within the depression in the second rail to fill the gap provided by the said depression.
10. In: combination, main rails and side rails, -connected switch points within the main and side rails, said switch points having their ends provided with head extensions, the main rails being depressed and adapted to receive the head enlargement of one of the points, when the said point is movedtoward the said rail, guide members arranged in a plane with the opposite vertical walls of the depressions and projecting beyond the depressions to provide ledges upon which the head extensions of the points rest, filler blocks within the depressions, and means for lowering the filler block within the depression occupied by one of thehead extensions, and for elevating the block within the depression of the second rail to fill the gap provided by the said depression 11. In combination, main rails and side rails, connected switch points between the main and side rails, the main rails having their inner faces depressed, filler plates within the depressions a frame slidably arranged below the depressions, supporting blocks upon the frame, means for throwing the switch points to bring one of the sameto within one of the depressions, and meehas nism operated by the switch points and con-i nected with the filler plates and frame forsimultaneously sliding the frame and actuating the filler plates to raise and lower the said plates and to bring the supporting block out of engagement with the plate in the recess receiving the switch point and into Y supporting engagement with the second filler plate to sustain the same elevated to a plane flush with the head of the rail.

- meansfor throwing the switch points to cause their actuating members to swing the rocker members to lower one of the filler plates to permit of the reception of the end of one of the switch points within the depression of one of the rails and to elevate the second filler plate to fill the gap provided by rails having depressions to receive the end of either of the switch points, a filler plate within each of the depressions, pivoted rockers, a link connectionbetween the rockers and the plates, a movable supporting block for each of the plates, a depending member upon each of the switch points and engaging with the rocker member of each of the filler plates and adapted to swing both of the rocker members toelevate one of thefiller plates to fill the depression of one of the rails and to move the supporting blocks to cause one of the said blocks to underlie the elevated filler plate and the second block to be moved from below the second filler plate to permit of the lowering of the said second plate and to position the end of oneof the switch points, supporting ties for the rails and switch points, the main rails having their inner faces provided with oppositely depressed portions, vertically movable filler plates withinthe depressions, arched members pivoted to certain of the ties, link connections between the arched members and the filler plates, bearing plates secured to the under faces of the ties provided with the arched members, a slidable frame arranged upon the bearing plates, blocks having inner beveled faces connected with the frame, a stud arranged adjacent each of the blocks, the
inner lower edges of the filler plates being beveled, projecting members upon the switch points adapted to engage with the arched members and within contacting relation to the studs, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

In comblnation, main rails and side" rails, connected switclrpoints betweenthe main and side rails, the switch points hav ing their ends provided with head projections, the main rails having web reinforce- 'ments which terminate in horizontal ledges, means for swingmg the switch points and to bring the head extensions of the same over and into engagement with the ledges.
