SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters'Patent No. 761,764, dated June 7, 1904. Application filed September 4, 1903. Serial No. 171,933. (No model.)

' .lamps and the like, and it primarily seeks to provide, a device of this character of a'simple, cheap, and durable construction which will effectively serve its intended purposes.

The invention in its generic nature consists of a plate of sheet metal adapted to be fas tened onto the cap of the miner, and the'said plate includes a spring-clamp for holding the lamp in position and a fire-guard to prevent the flame reaching the fabric of the cap while the miner is at work or while he is walking.

With other objects in view, which will hereinafter be apparent, the invention consists in certain novel construction and arrangement appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 isa perspective showing my invention as applied for use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, showing how the fire-shield serves to protect the fabric of the cap. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the invention with the lamp removed. Fig. 5 is a detail view of a slightly-modified form of my invention hereinafter'referred to.

In the drawings, in which like numerals and letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures, 1 designates the cap, which has the usual vizor l, to which and to the fabric of the cap, my invention is secured.

Theholder (generally designated by A) consists of a spring-metal frame consisting of a lower .laterallyextended fasteningstrip a, which has eyelets a at each end, through which and the vizor 1 the eyelets m are adapted to pass to secure the strip a to the vizor, asclearly shown in Fig. 3. By constructing the'plate with the S-shaped portion a the said plate will become springy in it's actionto'; permit of the usual movement between the cap fabric and the vizor and at the same time keep the vizor and fabric always in proper position. The strip a also serves as a stiffener for the vizor.

I may find it desirable to omit the springclamp and to stamp out a portion of the plate a near the top, as at 20, and to bend the stamped parts 20 into the form of an eye.

So far as described it will be seen that I provide a holder which can be made of a single piece of sheet metal and which will effectively serve its intended purposes, and by providing the flame guard or shield, as shown, the flame from the lamp will be prevented from coming in contact with the cap fabric, and consequently all danger of fire avoided. By raising the bottom of the lamp from contact with the strip a and the cap-vizor any danger of injuring the vizor is avoided. The S-shaped portion of the plate (0 serves the twofold purpose of imparting a springiness to the plate as well as holding the lamp-body away from the cap fabric, while the slit in the upper loop of the S-shaped portion serves as a hook-receiving portion, as above stated.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought the advantages and complete operation of my invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which it appertains, and I desire it understood that slight changes and modification in the detail arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

1. Adevice for the purposes described, comprising a plate having means for clamping and supporting the lamp, said means including an integral outwardly-bent bracket portion upon which the lamp is adapted to rest, the said plate also having a curved strip at the lower end adapted to be fastened to the vizor of the cap and integral lateral projections at the upper end adapted to be secured to the cap fabric as specified.

2. A device for the purpose described, comprising a curved base-piece adapted to be attached to the vizor of the cap, a member extended up from said base-piece which includes a vertical S-shaped portion, a guard-plate projected upwardly from and integral with the S-shaped portion, and lamp-clamping devices attached to the member that extends up from the base-piece.

3. In a device of the character stated, a plate having a strip extending at right angles thereto at its lower end, said strip being adapted to be attached to the vizor of the cap, a bracket above said strip, said plate having an S-shaped portion having a hook-receiving slot, adapted to receive the hook of a lamp, and a clamp for holding the lamp on the bracket with its hook in the slot, for the purposes specified.

In a device of the character stated, a plate having a strip extending at right angles thereto at its lower end, said strip being adapted to be attached to the vizor of the cap, a bracket above said strip, said plate having an S-shaped portion having a hook-receiving slot, :ulapted to receive the hook of a lamp, and a clamp for holding the lamp on the bracket with its hook in the slot, and a fire-guard secured to said plate, for the purposes specified.

5. In a device of the character stated, a plate having a strip extending at right angles thereto at its lower end, said strip being adapted to be attached to the vizor of the cap, a bracket above said strip, said plate havinan S-shapcd portion having a hook-receiving slot, adapted to receive the hook of a lamp, and a clamp for holding the lamp on the bracket with its hook in the slot, and a fire-guard integrally formed therewith, for the purposes specified.

6. In a lamp-holder, a plate having an S- shaped portion near its upper end, and a laterally-extending fastening-strip integral with and at right angles to the lower end of the said plate, a bracket extending at right angles to said strip above said strip for receiving a lamp, and a fire-shield at the other end of the plate, as specified.

7. Alamp-holder comprising a plate having an S-shapcd portion at the upper end which terminates with a vertically-cxtended guardpiece, said guard-piece having its lower edges formed with ears adapted to connect with the fabric of the cap, the lower end of the plate having an integral fastening-strip bent at right angles and adapted to be secured to the vizor member or cap, and a lamp-clampingmember mounted on the said plate midway its ends, said plate having a horizontal bracket-piece at the bent end below the lamp-clamping member as specified.

8. A lamp-holder comprising a plate having an integral fastening-strip at each end and extending laterally therefrom, the lowermost fastening-strip being bent at right angles to the plate and adapted to be fastened to the capvizor, the upper fastening-strip adapted to be secured to the cap fabric, and meansfor holding a lamp on said plate, said means including a bracket-piece integral with the plate, for the purposes specified.

9. A lamp holder comprising a springmetal plate having an integral fastening-strip at each end and extending laterally therefrom, the lowermost fastening-strip being bent at right angles to the plate and adapted to be socured to the cap fabric, the uppermost fastening-strip being extended to form a vertical guard member, and means for holding a lamp on said plate, said means including a springclamp.

10. A lamp -holder comprising a springmetal plate having integral fastening-strips at each end and extending laterally therefrom, the lowermost fastening-strip being bent at right angles to the plate and adapted to be fastened to the vizor of the cap, the upper fastelr ing-strip being adapted to be secured to the cap fabric, said plate having a portion bent at 12. A lamp-holder comprising a plate hav ing an S-shaped bend and a hook-receiving slot in said bend, said plate having a bracket portion at its lower end, and a fire-shield at its upper end, means for securing said plate to the cap and means for holding the lamp on said bracket With its hook in the hook-receiving slot in the S-shaped bend, for the purposes specified.
