"UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD H.. DFYVES,v OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
wAGoN-BODY CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,456, dated May 31, 1904.
Application filed November 4, 1901. Serial No. 81,110. (Nomodel.)
To all whom, it may concern:
'Be it known that I, EDWARD II. DEWEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Body Clamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in.
body-clamps; and it consists in the novel arrangement, constructlon, and combination of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and set forth in the claim.
The object of this invention is to provide a device to be secured to the sides of a wagonbody, especially the farm-wagon type, and is for the purpose to tightly clamp the sideboards tothe body proper.
i A further object is its simplicity and rapid manner of manipulation and adjustment for the various pressure desired.
Figure 1 is a front View of my complete invention shown in its operative position. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, showing its released position by dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a ldetail vertical sectional view of the upper socket member. l Fig. 4 is a detail vertical sectional view of the lower member, some of its supported parts being broken away. Fig. 5 is a detail view, with a part vbroken away, of the pressure-bolt made use of in connection with my invention. Fig,6 is a detail plan view of the nut used in connection with my invention.
In the construction of thedevice as shown I provide two suitablecastings 1 and 2, all
parts being preferably malleable and are secured to the'wagon-body and side-board by screws or like devices, as found most substantial by the trade. The casting 1 is secured to the side-board 3 and the casting 2 to the wagon-body 4. Integral withthe casting 2 are ears orprojecting lugs 5, eachprovided with trunnions 6, on which is pivotally'secured a toggle-lever 7 having A.apertures 8 for supv porting the nut 9 and acting as bearings for its integral trunnions 10.
',The nut is provided with a threaded aperture through which the pressure-bolt 11 is Vpassed and therein adjusted,.the head of said bolt being preferably T-shaped, as shown. It will be observed lby referring to the side view of the drawings that the aperture 8 is arranged out of vertical alinement with the trunnions 6. The purpose of this is to provide a straight leverage upon the bolt, so that when the same has passed the lcenter it will remain in the tightened position, as shown.
The casting 1 has a socket 12, in which the head of the bolt rests, and is sufficiently strong to withstand the pulling pressure.
Much diiiiculty heretofore has been found by farmers in finding a means whereby the y yside-board could be tightly fitted upon the wagon-body. As a result the grain would be lost by fallingV through the open joint. By
this device a perfect tight fit can be had and can be regulated by the adjustment of the bolt in the nut. Its operation is simple and efficient and its construction cheap and durable. I claim- A wagon-body clamp comprising castings 1 and 2, a pocket formed on casting 1, integral -ears formed on casting 2, a toggle-lever 7 pivoted to said ears, a nut carried by said toggle-lever, a T-shaped bolt 11 resting in the pocket of casting V1, and adjusted in nut 9, for the purpose of drawing the wagon-body together, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD H. -DEwEs
