UNITE STATES HENRY F. RENNER, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO IIOLLANDS MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
BENCH-=VISE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 680,439, dated August 13, 1901. Application filed February 16, 1901. Serial No. 47,657. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY F. RENNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bench-Vises and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the'same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to bench-Vises, and particularly to that type having an adjustable jaw, so as to adapt the vise to clamp both straight and tapering pieces.
The principal object of my invention is to simplify and improve the manner 'of mounting the adjustable jaw upon and connecting it with the vise-frame. To accomplish this result, I make a circular flanged opening in the top of the vise-frame, having parts of the flange cut away, and upon the under surface of the adjustable jaw there is a downwardlyprojecting stud havinga flange partly broken away on its lower end adapted to interlock with the flange in the opening in the frame when the adjustable jaw is in operative position, rendering the jaw capable of being easily adjusted, while at the same time it is exceedingly stable in its connection with the vise-frame.
The features of this invention are hereinafter set forth and described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a longitudinal section of a vise embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the vise with the adjustable jaw removed, but with it shown in dotted lines in place thereon. Fig. 3 is a View of the under surface of the adjustable jaw shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
In the drawings thus illustrating my invention, A is a vise-frame, B the longitudinallymoving jaw thereof, 0 the screw for operating the longitudinally-moving jaw, and D the nut secured in the frame A, all of which parts, except the frame A, are of the usual construction.
The frame A is provided with a plain horizontal surface or j aw-seat a above the opening A, in which the arm 13 of the jaw B opcrates, and in the horizontal surface aof the frame, near the front end thereof, there is a -circular opening E, which preferably extends down into the opening A. Around the upper edge of the opening E there is an inwardly-projecting flange e, having portions thereof cut away at e and e on the opposite sides thereof, said opening and the flange therein being clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. There is also an opening a in the upper surface ct of the frame, near the rear end thereof, as and for the purpose hereinafter set forth. Upon the surface a of the frame A, I
place an adjustable jaw F, Fig. 3. The under face of this jaw F is provided with a stud F, which projects downward from the under surface of the jawFand is provided with sections f f of an annular flange around the lower end thereof, the sections f f of the flange thereon being adapted to pass down through the openings e a m the flange e in the opening E in the frame when the jaw F is at right angles to the frame A, and on being turned slightly the flange-sections ff interlock with the flange-sections c e on the frame,
as illustrated in Fig. l, and prevent the jaw v F from being lifted up, yet allow the jaw to swing freely in the opening E in the frame and be used. at any angle to the jaw B- desired.
Through the adjustable jaw F, I make a hole f which is adapted to register with the hole a in the frame when the faces of the jaws B and F are parallel and receive a pin I, placed in said holes to retain the jaw in such position.
Having thus fully described my invention, its operation is so obvious as to enable others to use the same without further description thereof. Therefore what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The combination in a bench-vise of a frame, a seat for an adjustable jaw thereon having a circular opening therein, an interrupted annular flange around said opening, an adjustable jaw fitting upon said seat, a stud thereon projecting down into the flanged opening therein, and an interrupted annular flange on said stud, adapted to engage the having spaces of unequal length thereon interrupted flange in said opening, substan adapted'to engage the flange-sections in said tially as and for the purpose set forth. opening, substantially as and forthe purpose 2. lhe combination in a benoh-vise, of a set forth. I5 5 stationary frame, a seat thereon for an ad- In testimony whereof I affix my signature justable jaw having a circular opening therein presence of two Witnesses.
in, inwardly-projecting flanges having spaces of unequal length in said opening, an adjustable jaw fitting upon the seat on said Witnesses: 20 frame, a stud thereon projecting downward H. M. STURGEON,
into the opening in said seat, radial flanges A. L. JACKSON.
