Application iled November 13, 1926. Serial No. 148,189.
This invention relates to clamps for the use, more particularly, of builders in banding molds in which are cast concrete columns and the like.
The object of my invention is to provide :i clamp of this character having advantages over others hitherto in use.
rIheinvention consists in the novel construction, adaptation and combination of dcvices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing,-
Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of a column form with clamping devices embodying the invention shown in side elevaf tion Fie". 2 is an enlar ed longitudinal section of a portion of the clamp. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of a band head attachment shown in the preceding views; Fig. 4L is an under side plan view of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on line 5 5 of Fig. 2; Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a bolt-and-head connector; and Fig. 7 is a front elevation of Fig. 6. l
The invention comprises two complementary head pieces 10 each having a base element 11 and a bifurcated post element 12 at one end and arranged in substantially right angular relation with each other.
At the rear of the post a base element 11 is provided with two spaced apart slots 18 and 14 thereby providing two transverselyV arranged bars 15 and 16. In the underside of the base element, a head is provided -with a recess 17 extending forwardly beneath the respective post. The purpose of said recess is to receive the forwardly flanged portion 18 of an apertured plate 19 which is adapted to seat against the plane rear surface 20 of a post. Said plate including its flange 18, hereinafter designated as a connector, serves to receive through its aperture a A screw threaded coupling bolt 21 extending through the slots between the bifurcations of the respective posts, the head 22 of the bolt bearing upon a connector of one head and the nut 23 for the bolt bearing against the companion connector of the other head.
In practice, the heads are connected to t-he opposite ends of a flexible metal strap or band 24, which ends are threaded through the respective head slots 13 and 14 and about the bar 15 and over the bar 16, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
A clamp embodying the present invention maybe used for a number of applications, 5 but for the purpose of illustration, it is shown in Fig. 1 as applied for banding a quadralateral form F in kwhich a concrete column may be east. lIn such form, 25 represent peripheral wall boards, and 26, cleats having their ends chamfcred, as at2', serving as supports for the clamp.
It is to be noted that each of the posts of the respective head pieces is provided with a slot which is open at the top to receive the bolt, and that the bolt is held down against the bottoms, as 28,v of the post slots by means of the connectors when the lips or flanges 18 are engaged within the recesses 17 of the respective heads. J f
The purpose of the bifurcated construction of the posts and the cooperating connectors is'that it facilitates the application of the bolttothe clamp-fan operation which is extremely difiicult with work of large diameter-and also prevents the accidental displacement of the bolt.
The connectors furthermore serve to hold the bolts closer to the work than with heads having enclosed holes through which the bolt has to be passed, and permitting a bolt head and its nut extending into the slots 13 ofthe heads.
rlhe construction and advantages of the invention will, it is believed, be understood from the foregoing description.
l/Vhat I claim, is,-y
1. A clamp comprising a band of iiexible material, a head piece secured to each end of the band, each of said head pieces'having a base element and a bifurcated post element disposed in substantially rectangular rela-` tion to'each other, aheaded screw bolt, a nut therefor, and devices provided with apertures to receive the bolt and provided with means detachably engageable with the head pieces for retaining the bolt within the spaces between the bifurcations of the respective posts.
2. In a clamp of the character described, a head piece having a base element and a bifurcated post element disposed at approxipreferably, y
= plate having a bolt-receiving aperture therein and-is adapt-edto .engagejthe -headypiece 3. Ina-clamp as deiinedln claim 2, Wherein the plate is provided with a. flange ,por-
tion and the base element is provided in its underside With a recess to receive said flange 10 portion to position the holt in proximity to the bottom of the Space betweenvthe hifurcations of the post.
Signed at Seattle, Washington, this 22nd day of October, 1926.
