This invention relates to improvements in handlesfor the frames of bags and a 'novel means of attachment whereby the ends of the handles are pivotally connected with the bagframes; and the invention has for its primary object to provide a simple, cheap, dur'able,

and operative device or means forpivotally connecting the end portions-otthe handle (whether said handle is flexible, as when constructed of leather, or Whether the handle is made solid, as when cast in metal) to-the bagframe.

A further object of this invention is to journal the ends of the handle'in such a manner that a free and comparatively frictionless os.-

My invention consists in the novel arrange merits and combinations of the parts,- as well as in the details of theconstruction of the same, all of which will be hereinafter more fully deof the claim.-

Each plate 5 is provided at one end with an upwardly-extending post 7, which is formed at its lower end with a shoulder 8 and a shank or lug 9, the said lug or shank 9 being inserted in an opening 10 in the said plate 5 and then upset or riveted over, as at 11, thus forming a secure and rigid fastening. The said post 7 1s also provided with an opening 12, which forms a bearing in which is journaled a thimble or cap 13. Secured to the opposite end of the said plate 5 is another post, 14:, also provided with a shoulder 15 and a shank or lug 16, which is inserted in the opening 17 of the plate 5 and then upset or riveted over, as at 18, for the purpose of furnishing a secure and rlgid fastening. This post 14 is also provided with an opening 19, which forms a bearing in which is journaled the shank of an ornamental rivet-head 21. The said shank 20 of the said ornamental rivet-head 21 is inserted 1n an opening or perforation 22 in the closed end portion of the thimble or cap 13 and is then upset or riveted over, as at 23, thus forming a secure connection with the said thimble or cap 13 and serving the double purpose of preventing the said thimble or cap 13 from slipping from its bearing 12 of the post 7 and also providing an extra bearing which tends to maintain all the parts in a true alinement, and thereby prevents the said parts from bending or binding and pulling out of shape, in such case making a free and comparatively frictionless oscillatory movement of the parts possible.

From an inspection of Figs. 1 and t it will be seen that the respective ends 3 of the handle 2 are inserted in the receiving-sockets of the thimbles or caps 13 andthen permanently secured in place by means of suitable pins 2 1, which extend through perforations in the 0pposite sides of the thimbles and through the end portions of the handle, as illustrated.

In practice the parts of the attachment are assembled by inserting the closed but perforated end of the thimble or cap 13 through the opening 12 in the post 7 until the said end rests against the face of the post 14, bringing the opening 19 in said post 14 and the perforation 22 in alinement with each other. The shank 20 of the rivet-head 21 is then placed in the two holes 19 and 22 and its free end 23 upset or riveted over, as illustrated, and the attachment is then ready for the reception of the end portion 3 of the handle to be secured in place in the socket of the thimble or cap 13 by means of the pin 24, as has been herein above fully described, the closed end portion of the thimble and the shoulder 25 of the rivet-head, while permitting the rotary movement of the thimble, preventing all possible lateral movement and displacement of the thimble from the two post-bearings of the attachment.

I am aware that some changes may be made in the details of the construction of the parts of the device without departing from the scope of my present invention. Hence I do not limit my invention to the exact details of the construction of the various parts of the handle attachment.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination, with a bag-handle, of a plate and a pair of upwardly-extending posts, each post being provided with a bearing, a thimble provided with areeeiving-socket journaled in thebearing of one of said posts, a shank journaled in the bearing of the other post, said shank being connected at one end with a portion of said thimble, and means at the opposite end of said shank to prevent lateraldisplacement of the said thimble and said shank from the bearings of said posts, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. The combination, with a bag-handle, of a plate and a pair of upwardly-extending posts, each post being provided with a bearing, a thimble provided with a receiving-socket journaled in the bearing of one of said posts, a shank journaled in the bearing of the other post, said shank being connected at the one end with a portion of said thimble, and a shouldered rivet-head at the opposite end of said shank to prevent lateral displacement of the said thimble and shank from the bearings of said posts, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. The combination, with a bag-handle, of a plate and a pair of up wardl y-extend in g posts, each post being provided with a bearing, a thimble provided with a receiving-socket for the reception of the end of the bag-handle, a closed end portion connected with the said thimble arranged against the face of the other post, said closed end of the thimble being provided with a perforation in alinement with the bearing of the post against which the closed end of the thimble is arranged, a shank jou rnaled in the bearing of said post and extending into the perforation in the closed end of said thimble and secured to said thimble, and means upon the free end of said shank to prevent lateral displacement of said thimble and said shank from the bearings of said posts, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
