Be it known that I, NAPOLEON B. GOULD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houlton, in the county of Aroostook and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness-Collar Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to im rovements in horse-collar fasteners of that c ass which detachablyconnect the lower or bottom ends of the two half-sections of the collar of a draftharness.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, durable, and efficient fastener of this character by means of which the two side sections or halves of a collar may be quickly and easily connected together or disconnected from each other.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a harness-collar with my improved fastening means applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail bottom plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 3 3 in Fig 2. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 4 4 in Fig 3, and Figs. 5 and 6 are perspective views of the adjacent ends 1oif the two members of the fastener or coup- Fteferring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes a harness-collar of any suitable form and construction and consisting of two side sections or halves 2 and 3, which are connected by my improved fastener 4. Thelatter consists of two similar members 5 and 6, which are secured upon the lower or bottom ends of the collar-sections 2 and 3 and which have a detachable button and slot connection, as shown. Each of the fastener members, which are preferably formed by casting them of suitable metal, comprises a double cylindrical body 7, which conforms in shape in cross-section to the shape of the cross-section of the collar-sections, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The body portions 7 have their outer ends 8 closed and their inner ends open, as at 9, to receive the lower ends or bottoms of the collar-sections. The two substantially cylindrical portions of the body 7 are separated, as shown at 10, upon their under sides to permit them to be expanded or contracted to fit or firmly engage the collarsections. The latter are preferably secured in said members by bolts, rivets, or other fasteningmeans 1 1, which are passed through the members and the ends of the collar-sections.

The detachable connection between the fastening members 5 and 6 consists in forming in the closed outer end 8 of the member 6 key-shaped slots 12, which are engaged by headed buttons or studs 13 upon the adjacent ends of the member 5. The slots 12 consist of large portions 14 and reduced portions 15, the latter being adapted to engage .the necks or shanks 16 of the buttons 13 and the former being of sufficient size to receive the heads 17 u on the ends of said shanks or necks 16 of tiie buttons or studs.

The construction, use, and advantages of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. It will be seen that by means of the same the two sections of the collar may be quickly and easily connected or disconnected at their lower ends, so that the collar may be applied to the neck of the horse or the draftanimal byplacing the same over its neck. By applying the collar in this manner it need not be unbuckled at its top, and there will be no twisting or stretching of the side portions of the collar. This fastener not only prolongs the life of the collar, but renders the application and removal of the same more easy and convenient.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
