PATENT OFFICE.
HORSE-COLLAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 760,544, dated May 24, 1904. Application filed January 22, 1904. Serial No. 190,098. (No model.)
To all whom it nuty concern.-
Be it known that I, J osnrn I'IENRY MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Horse-Collars; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to lock-seams for horsecollars, and has for its object the provision of a supplementary or lock seam for preventing the principal seam uniting the shoulder-pad and the liner or the seam uniting the shoulderpad, liner, and rim pieces from tearing out.
It consists, in combination with a shoulderpad and a liner-piece attached together'by a ribbon or tape seam of any suitable material carried in and out through the overlapping edges of said pad and liner, of a thread-sean1 stitched through said tape, liner, and pad.
It also consists of certain other constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a finished collar, showing my said invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of pertions of said liner and pad pieces and of the uniting-tape and of said lock-seam; and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view through portions of said liner and pad pieces and tape, showing said thread-seam in elevation.
In the drawings, 1 is a portion of the liner piece of said collar, and 2 is a portion of the shoulder-pad piece of the same. These two pieces are overlapped and connected together by a tape 3, carried in and out through said pad-piece and through the liner-piece near the edge thereof. Heretofore said tape has tended to tear out transversely through the edge of said liner-piece. I have therefore provided a lock-seam comprising athread 4, which I run through said tape, liner-piece, and pad-piece to prevent transversemovement of said tape. The liner 1, shoulder-pad 2, and rim-piece 5 are united together by a similar tape, which is also secured against transverse movement by a similar thread-seam. The thread-seam may be of any suitable or desirable material and style of stitch and may be single or plural Within the spirit and scope of my said invention. I do not, therefore, desire to limit myself to the particular style 01" stitch shown in the drawings. Said tape may also be of any desired material.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a horse-collar, the combination with portions of the body of the collar united together with a ribbon or tape seam, of a threadseam stitched through said body portions and through said tape-seam, substantially as described.
2. In a horse-collar, the combination of a liner-piece and a shoulder-pad piece, a ribbon or tape carried in and out through said pieces to form a uniting-seam and a relatively narrow seam carried in and out through said liner-piece and shoulder-pad piece and tape substantially as described.
3. In a horse-collar, the combination of a liner-piece and a shoulder-piece and a rimpiece, a ribbon or tape carried in and out through said pieces to form a uniting-seam, and a relatively narrow seam carried in and out through said liner-piece and shoulder-pad piece and rim-piece and tape, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH HENRY MILLER.
