UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. GRIFFIN, OF STITILLWATER, MINNESOTA.
COMBINATION ARTICLE OF FURNITURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,700, dated May 10, 1904.
Application filed July 3, 1903. Serial No. 164,167. (No model.)
To all whom at may concern.-
Be it known that 1 JAMES H. GRIFFIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stillwater,
construct an article of furniture in such mannor that it may be easily converted at will from a chair or settee into a table, or vice versa, this conversion being obtained through a member of the article of furniture which serves both as a back and a top and having one smooth side and the opposite side uphol' stered or cushioned in a manner corresponding to the upholstery of the remaining part of the chair or settee.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an article of furniture embodying the features of the invention and showing the same arranged as a chair or settee in full lines and the manner of converting the same into a table in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section through a part of the combined chair or settee back and table-top and one of the arms which serve as a support for the same, the device in this instance being shown arranged as a table.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the views.
The numeral 1 designates a chair or settee having an upholstered seat 2 with legs 3. An exact contour or style of chair is not essential to the successful operation of the invention, and it will be understood that the chair or settee may be varied as long as it is'provided with uprights 4 at the opposite sides having horizontal arms 5 rigidly secured thereon. On each of the arms 5 a metallic guide and wear strip 6 is terminally secured, the ends of the strip being bent at an angle and embracing the opposite ends of the arms. The strips 6 between their bent ends are held at a slight elevation above the upper surface of the arms, and movable thereover are slides 7, one on each, having inturned end edges 8, which embrace the side edges of the strips. The slides 7 are hinged at their rear ends to elongated metallic straps 9, attached to a com bined back and table-top 10, the said straps being disposed over the strips 6 when the device is arranged as a table to prevent wear directly on the combined back and table-top 10. The end of each strap 9 opposite that attached to the slide has a central locking tongue or hook 11, which removably engages an opening 12 in the rear end of the strips 6 when the device is arranged as a table to prevent the combined back and top 10 from moving out of place.
The one side of the combined back and top 10 has an upholstered pad 13, which will correspond to the upholstery of the seat 2, and the reverseside of said combined back and top is smooth and flat, as at 14. In some instances both sides of the back maybe smooth where the invention is employed in connection with a chair or settee that is devoid of upholstery.
When the improved article of furniture is arranged as a chair or settee, the combined back and table-top 10 depends over one side of the remaining part of the chair or settee structure, and the slides will then be adjacent one terminal of each arm; The slides being attached to the combined back and table-top nearer one edge than the other will cause said combined back and top to be thrown in close to the chair or settee structure at its lower end when a pressure of the back of the occupant of the chair or settee is brought against the upper part of said combined back and table-top. When the device is arranged as a table, the slides 7 are moved completely over the strips 6 until the tongues or hooks 11 are in firm engagement with the openings 12. By this means a table will be formed adapted for use for any purpose, and the part of the table opposite that attached to the slides will be I ing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. A chair having arms with guides extending along the same and provided with openings at the rear ends, a combined back and table-top having straps secured thereto having terminal projections to engage the openings in the guides, and slides hinged to the opposite ends of the straps and embracing, and movable longitudinally on the said guides.
2. A chair, having arms with guides extending along the same and provided with openings at the back end, and a combined back and table-top carrying hinge connections which are attached at one end to the back and top, the connections being slidable on the guides and having projections on the ends opposite those attached to the combined back and top, for engaging the said openings when the device is arranged as a table.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES H. GRIFFIN.
