PATENT OEEIcE.
JOHN JACOB SHERMAN, JR, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,561, dated May 10, 1904.
Application filed August 14, 1902.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J ACOB SHERMAN, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Im provements in Frames for Pictures, &c., of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to frames for pictures, looking-glasses, &c.; and my primary object is to provide a frame of this character having the qualities of eheapness, durability, and improved appearance.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a broken front view of a frame; Fig. 2, a broken rear view of the same; Fig. 3, a broken sectional view parallel with the frame; Fig. 4, a broken sectional View taken as indicated at line iof Fig. 1; Fig. 5, a View of a corner connection em ployed, the view being taken as indicated at line 5 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 6, a broken rear View of a modification.
In the preferred construction I employ turned spiral side members A A, turned spiral end members B B, and turned corner members or spheres C, serving to join adjacent ends of adjacent side and end members. The side and end members have reduced extremities or tenons a of circular cross-section originally, and the balls have intersecting bores b at right angles to each other and receiving the extensions (0, the latter being Initered so as to abut at a diagonal plane, as shown at Fig. 3. Assuming the parts to be assembled, the frame is channeled on its rear side by cutting away a quarter-section of the side and end members and an eighth-section of each corner-ball, thereby providing a recess D for receiving the glass, picture, and picture-back. As thus described, the tenons are bound throughout three-quarters of their cylindrical surfaces by the walls of the sockets or bores I), there remaining of each ball a triangular projection c, which fits between the inner cylindrical surfaces of the corresponding tenons. Moreover, at the base of each tenon is a shoulder (Z, which abuts against the corner-ball, adja- Serial No. 119,648. (No model.)
cent to the socket. Thus, it will be understood, when the frame is put together, employing glue, if desired, a very firm connection results, and it is noteworthy also that the miter-line cannot be viewed from the front of the frame, so that the appearance of the corner is improved greatly.
In Fig. 6 a modification is shown wherein the members A B have short tenons extending into shallow sockets and abutting at their ends against the bottoms f of the sockets. The frame has the channel D,producing plane surfaces f f Where the ball is cut.
Various other modifications within the spirit of my invention exist. Hence no undue limitation should be understood from the foregoing detailed description.
What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A frame of the character described, com prising side and end members having projecting tenons, and corner members having sockets receiving said tenons, said frame having a channel at its rear side, for the purpose set forth.
2. A frame of the character described, comprising side and end members having tenons, and corner members having sockets receiving said tenons, said frame being channeled and having sections of said corner members cut away, said corner members having projections fitting between adjacent lateral surfaces of adjacent tenons, for the purpose set forth.
3. A frame of the character described, comprising turned side and end members having reduced extremities affording tenons, turned corner members having bores at right angles to each other and receiving said tenons, said side and end members including tenons having a quarter-section cut away and said corner members having an eighth-section cut away, thereby affording a channel for receiving a picture, or the like, for the purpose set forth.
JOHN JACOB SHERMAN, JR.
