UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
KATHERINE HELEN MGFARLAND, OE CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CORSET ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 759,542, dated May 10, 1904.
Application filed December 17, 1908. Serial No. 185,601. (No model.)
To MZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, KATHERINE HELEN Mo- FAELAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Corset Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to garment stays or retainers, and it is particularly adapted for holding' or retaining the front part of a shirtwaist, so as to effectually produce the dipfront effect.
Another object is to provide a stay which will be capable of engagement with the opposing adjacent fastening-stays of a corset, so that the liability of the unclasping of the corset While being worn will be avoided, thus insuring' the proper position of the waistband at all times.
A further object is to provide means for quickly removing and attaching the stay or retainer, as well as to provide one which will efliciently perform the service without producing an unsightly appearance.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel feature thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
In the drawings, Figure l is a fragmentary detail view of a pair of adjacent fasteningstays withmy invention applied. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the stays with the retainer detached. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View of the retainer. Fig. i is a transverse sectional view of my invention applied, and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the retainer-blank.
The numerals 1 and 2 designate the two adjacent opposing fastening-stays for a corset, each of which is provided with a transverse bar 3, having an intermediate offset constituting a loop 4c. These bars are designed as fastening devices for engagement with a garment-stay, which also serves as means for locking the two corset-stays together. The
bars are intended to be placed below the waistline of the corset, and the stay or retainer engaging them consists of a flexed strip 5 of sheet metal having an intermediate straight portion 6, with a downwardly-disposed hookshaped terminal 7 at its upper` end, while at the lower end are two parallel upwardly-disposed locking- tongues 8 and 9 for engage ment with the offset loops 4. The tongues 8 and 9 are slightly yieldable and lie closely adjacent to the straight intermediate portion, so that the offset loops of the bars 3 will be frictionally engaged between the tongues and the adjacent surface or wall of the intermediate portion 6.
Inasmuch as the engaging tongues 8 and 9 are spaced apart so as to engage the respective bars on the opposing corset-stays, the stays will be efficiently secured together, so as to avoid all liability of the corset becoming accidentally unclasped.
The downwardly-disposed terminal 7 is slightly curved, so as to snugly fit over the skirt-band, and thus prevent an appearance of a protuberance at the point of the connection of the retainer and stay with the corset.
The bars 3 can be applied to any preferred type of corset to suit the ligure of the wearer, and after adjusting the corset the retainer will be moved into locking engagement with the loops on the hars.
The draw-string or tape in the body-garment (such as a shirt-Waist) should then be drawn tight and tied under the hook of the retainer. The waistband of the outer skirt should then be moved under the hook, which will snugly clamp it against the wall of the straight intermediate portion, after which the belt can be adjusted without displaying any portion of the retainer.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with two adjacent corsetfastening stays having loops upon the faces thereof, of a garment-retainer having upwardly-extending tongues to engage said loops, and a downwardly-disposed skirt-bandengaging hook.
2. The combination with the adjacent corrny own I have hereto axed my signature in set-fastening stays, of loops on the respective the presence of two Witnesses.
Stays, and a garment-retainer having ielding tongues to bind the loops betWCe-eln the KATHERINE HELEN HOMELAND' 5 tongues andthe adjacent portion Oi' the re- Witnesses:
tainer. MAUD RICHARDSON KEITH,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as ALONZO D. FOSTER.
