EXTENSION-DASHBOARD FOR VEHICLES.
EaPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. '758,754 dated May 3, 1904.
Application filed Yul; 16; 1903.
o all 2171mm 7'1. nmy con/earn.-
Be it known that I, AQUILA 1V. I'IOLLINGS- woi-rrii, a citizen of the United States, residing at Iowa City, in the countyof Johnson and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Extension-Dashboard for Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mud-guards for vehicles, and is particularly designed to be attached to the dashboard, so as to prevent the nmd and dirt from being kicked into the vehicle by the draft-animal.
One of the main features of the invention is to provide a guard which can be quickly attached to and detached from the vehicle and one which maintains a certain amount of rigidity when in its operative position.
A further object of the device is to provide 'a guard which can be folded into compact form and stored when not in use.
Further objects and advantages, as well as the novel details of construction, will be set :forth in the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, and in which Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the device complete. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the device applied to a dashboard. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the device folded. Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a preferred form of frame with the cover removed, and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the frame of a modified form.
The preferred form of my invention is illustrated as comprising a frame having two members 1 and 2, provided with alining terminal eyes a and 5, through which projects a connecting pin or rod 6, the opposite terminals of which are threaded to receive the end nuts '7 and 8. between which and the intermediate nuts are the ends of the members 1 and 2. One of the members is braced by the transverse rods 9 and 10, terminally engaging one of the frame members and rod 6, while the other member is braced by the braces 11 and 1S, intermediately and terminally secured to the frame and having free terminals bearing against one of the members and exerting pressure thereon to prevent relative move- Serial No. 165,797. 1N0 model.)
ment of theframe-section in one direction. The frame is secured to the vehicle by a clip 13, comprising two connected spring-arms 11 and 15, intermediately coiled around the rods 6 and bearing against one of the frame members to exert pressure in an opposite direction to those designated by the terminals 11 and 12, each pressure device having rightangularly-bent fingers 16, which are adapted to bear against the respective frames. The same pressure being exerted against the frames from the opposite sides will tend to keep both members in alinement. The opposite ends of the arms forming the clip are free from engagement with the guard, so as to fit over one side of the guard, while the other side engages the vehicle and exerts a clamping effect in opposition to the clamping effect of the clip. \Vhen the guard is not applied, it will only be necessary to detach the fingers 16 from engagement with the framesection, whereupon the sections can be folded one upon the other, requiring a slight space for storage.
In the modified form the frame is illustrated as comprising a frame H, braced by a longitudinal brace 15 and transverse braces 16 and 17. The arms l i and 15 are terminally coiled around the brace 15 and terminally secured to one of the bars of the frame, the free ends being connected by a connection 18, providing a clip whereby the guard can be conveniently attached to the dashboard.
In actual practice the frame will be provided with a cover 19, which may consist of any suitable material.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A dashboard-gua rd,an d means for attaching it to a support said means being terminall y and intermediately engaged therewith to form a spring between which and the guard the support can be interposed.
2. A device of the character described having yielding arms, intermediate-1y and terminally secured thereto and provided with free terminals between which and the device, a support can be interposed.
3. A device of the character described comprising two hinged sections foldable one upon the other, and a brace, for holding the sections in substantially alining positions, having 1nnerlins for engagement with a dashboard-veic e.
4. In a device of the character described, a frame, a transverse rod carried by the frame, a means for securing the device to a support and {wing an intermediate portion engaged by the rod and a terminal engaging means connected to the frame.
5. A device of the class described, comprising two members hinged together, andameans for holding the members in substantially parallel planes and for clamping said device to a support.
6. A device of the class described, having two members hinged together, arms secured at the pivot point of the members and having terminals bearing against one of the members, the opposite terminals having clamping means to secure the device to a support.
7 A device of the class described comprising two hinged sections, arms intermediately secured to the device and having terminals removably engaging one of the sections to hold it in alinement with other section, and freearm terminals to engage a support.
8. Adevice of the character described comprising two hinged sections, arms connected to the hinged portion of the sections, and having right-angular fingers bearing against one of the sections, and clamping end on the arms parallel with the other section to engage a support. 7
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
AQUILA W. HOLLINGSWORTH.
