W. S. TRIPP.
VEHICLE POLE. No. 894,627. Patented Dec. 18, 1888.
N ['LIERS, Plmm Lllhogrnplwr. Wnshinglnn. u. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VRIGHT S. TRIPP, OF DE RI YTER, NE YORK.
VEHICLE-POLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,667, dated December 18, 1888.
Application filed March 19, 1888.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WRIGHT b. TRIPP, of De Ruyter, in the county of Madison, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Vehicle-Poles, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improvement in adjustable vehicle-poles; and it consists of certain novel details of the construction and arrangement of the same, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention pertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my device; Fig. 2, a side view of the same. Fig. 5-3 is a detail sectional view of one side of the hollow crossbar and its extension-arm, and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the socket for the pole.
to represents the vehicle-pole, of any desired size, form, or material, and a is a hollow metallic cross-bar secured across the end of the pole, as shown in the drawings. This cross-bar may be either straight or bent rearward, as herein illustrated, that being a matter of taste or convenience, and its ends are connected to the pole by braces l), secured to the ends of the cross-bar by suitable clips, 11. Each end of the cross-bar a has telescoped within it an extension-bar, 0, having its end bent at an angle and provided with an eye, 0, for engagement with the thillcoupling clipped upon the axle, as usual.
It is well known that in nearly every vehicle the distance between the thill-couplings varies, and that in transferring a pole from one vehicle to another it is almost always necessary to alter the location of the couplings to fit the pole. It is the object of my invention to obviate this annoyance, and I do it by drawing out or pushing in the ex Serial No. 267,613. No model.)
tension-bars c, and when properly adjusted they are held firmly in place by means of a set-screw, (Z, passed through the hollow bar u and impinging against the extension, and also by the brace-clips l), the ends of the hollow bar being split a short distance, as at c, in order that the clips may clamp them tirmly down.
The inner ends of the extensions care provided with rubber or elastic packing-ringsf to prevent any possible rattling.
In use it will be at once seen that the extensions are readily and quickly adjusted to fit any vehicle, and it is therefore a very convenient and economical device, since one pole may be used on any one of a number of vehicles, if desired. The end of the pole is received in a socket, g, having its end grooved and. corrugated to grasp the cross-bar, and a corrugated clip iron, g, on the other side serves, when bolted tightly, to complete the firm grasp.
It will be noted that the extensions may not only be drawn out for different widths, but are as readily turned up or down to lift or lower the end of the pole. This is very con venient in some cases and is quickly done.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combinat ion, with the pole u and hollow crossbar u, havng its ends split, as shown, of the extensions c, provided with elastic washers on their inner ends, the set-screw (l, and brace-clips b, substantially as and for the Din-pose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name, in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at De Ruyter, in the county of Madison, in the State of New York, this 5th day of March, 1888.
WRIGHT s. TRIPP.
