WITNESSES ,BWENTO R 65M Mm ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH RUPERT, OF YORK, PENNSYLVANIA.
THlLL-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,684, dated June 8, 1880. Application filed April 22,1880. N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH RUPERT, of York, in the county of York and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Anti-Rattlin g Clips for Thill- Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures ofreference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of my improved clip ap plied to a thill-conpling. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
This invention has relation toimprovements in anti-rattling clips for thill-couplings; and
it consists in an anti-rattler clip for thill-couplings, composed of a transverse bracket-form clip having a central recessed guide-ofl'set, a threaded perforation, a rubber carrier in the guide-reccss, a swivel-screw pivoted to said carrier and engaging the perforation, and arms having bolt-holes for the ends of the couplingbolt, as hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates an ordinary thill-coupling, connected to the shaft-iron B by a bolt, (J, which is made long enough to receive the arms a of myclip D, the bolt passing through the apertures I) in said arms, which extend upward or downward, according to the position of the clip below or above the coupling. This clip is in bracket form, extending over or under the coupling bolt and eye 0 of the shaft-iron, and is provided with a central offset, (1, having a square guide-recess, e, which is about equal in width to the eye 0, and is provided with a threaded perforation, It, through its back, as shown in the drawings. 7
E represents a bent or flanged metallic carrier, in which is seated the rubber cushion it between the flanges. This carrier is perforated at L for the attachment of the end of a swivel adjusting-screw, s, which passes through the threaded aperture h of the recessed offset, engaging therewith, and serving to adjust the position of the rubber cushion is when its head at is turned, pressing said cushion against the eye of the shaft-iron or drawing it away from the same, according to requirement.
I am aware that thill-co'uplings have been made with movable cushion-carriers and setscrews, and therefore I do not claim such devices.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The anti-rattler clip for thill-conplings, consisting of the transverse bracket-form clip D, having the central recessed gnide-ofi'set, d, the threaded perforation h, the rubber carrier E in the guide-recess e, the swivel-screw s, pivoted to said carrier and engaging with the perforation h, and the arms a, having the boltholes I) for the ends of the coupling-bolt, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH RUPERT.
