CARRIAGE POLE.
No. 302,455. Patented July 22, 1884.
WIJFNESSES ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SETH \VELLS AND DAVID B. NEW'TON, OF-MOUND VALLEY, KANSAS.
CARRIAGE-POLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 302,455, dated July 22, 1884:.
Application filed November 26, 1883. (No model.) A
To all whom it mayconcern Be itknown that we, SETH farms and DA- VID B. NEWTON, citizens of the United States, residing at Mound Valley, in the county of Labette and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buggy-Poles; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such-as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to makeand use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference markedthereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figurel of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is also aperspective view, and shows a modification of the same.
This invention has relation to poles for buggies and light wagons; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of de-' vices, as hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter a designates the body of the pole, and b the curved rear extension thereof, formed with a terminal eye, 0, whereby it may be fastened to a clip. In some instances the pole-extension may have two attachment-eyes, these being formed at the ends of a semicircular bar, d, which is connected by means of a T-iron to the end of the pole-extension.
e 6 indicate lateral arms, which are con nected to the pole at g by means of bolts h, and have terminal eyes k,which are connected to the end portions of the axle-tree by means of clips. The terminal eye act" the rear portion or extension, I), of the pole is also connected to the axle-tree by means of a clip. When the half-circle brace d is employed, its terminal eyes are secured to the axle-tree by means of the clips which hold the fifth-wheel thereto.
m m represent iron braces, which extend between the lateral bracing-arms e c and the pole-extension b, which may be made in circular or other ornamental form, and should be welded to the lateral arms 6 e and secured to the pole by means of bolts 2 z, as shown in th drawings.
This pole attachment is designed to be a safe one, as it has more than two points of attachment to the axle-tree, and will not, when one of the connections is broken, allow the axle-tree to get out of position.
Having described this invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
A buggy-pole having a rear extension, I), provided with a half-circle brace having terminal eyes to connect with the clips of the fifth-wheel, and lateral arms e, connected to clips of the axle, and braced to the extension I) by means of the braces m, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
