@teiten tas atnat @ffice STILLMEN' WHITE, OE PROVIDENCE, RSSIGNOR 'rOIIIMs'ELE AND CHRIS-` l r l 7IOIBEER DEXTER, OE' EAST PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
Letters Patent No. 75,819, dated llfmcu 24, 1868,
tits rlnhal maar in in tina trtinrs ntnit mit milking @nrt nf tige same TOALL' WHOM I'I MAYOONCERN:
Be it known that I, STILLMAN WHITE, of the city and county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and improved Force-Pump; and I dohereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make anduse the same, reference being had `to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification. l
vThis invention relates to a new and improved method of constructing force-pumps Awhereby a greater flow. of water is produced. p l i I y I It consists of three pistons united by a cross-head, worl ing in three cylinders or pump-barrels, thejvater being received in the middle eylinderfand discharged from orifices or noscsin the otherA two cylinders.
By the application of power to the centre piston-rod, from which, by a cross-head, power is communicated to the auxiliary rods, a certainhalance of strainis maintained, not found in. other pumps of more than one cylinder already invented. v 'l v The drawing represents a front view of my inventi on, portions of the cylinder shown as broken away to show the construction; a portion ofthe middle piston beingl also broken away to show the passage through it.
A is the cross-head; B is the middle piston-rod; (lk are the' side piston-rods; B is the middle cylinder or pump-barrel; G are the two side cylinders or pump-barrels ;4 b is the centrepiston; L is the valve ofthe same;
Ab are the two side pistons; d are their-valves; Fis achamher into which allV the cylinders open at their lower ends; E is an orifice orr pipeY through which the waterw enters the pump; o are orilices or noses, by `which the water is discharged. l I v y Y 'n f Y Therpump is composed of threecylinders or pump-barrels,B` and G placed side by side, the middle 'or centre cylinder, B', being larger thanlt'hecylindersftl "Said cylinders B C are constructed in .the ordinary way, and open at their lowerendsx-intofaCOminon chamber, iF., Themiddle cylinder B is provided with an orifice or pipe, E, near the upper end ofthe same, as shown in the'drawing.l The cylinders C are provided also near their upper ends with the orilcesor noses o, through which then-'eter is discharged. 4Each olsaid cylinders ;B C has a piston, b, fitting intoand moving lwithirritselfA in thcLordinary way, eachpiston having its pistonrod. Said piston-rods B Cpass through caps in the said cylinders I3 C', packed in the ordinary way, and are joineda't theirpupper ends by a cross-har, A,"fto Ywhich they are rigidly attached, so that all said pistons are moved up and down together. 4 The pistons iare all provided with passages through kthem for the passagaof water;` said piston, l', having a valve, vh, on the 'under side of the same, `opening downwards,` and said pistons, b, having valves, d, on their upper sides, opening upwards, as shown inthe drawing.
' The opera-tion is rcadilyseenlfrom thcdraw'ing, b eing the same as in pumps in common use, with the exception that all the pistons b b are moved upwardand downward together, their several piston-rods B C boing `joined together at their upper. ends by cross-head"A. l .i v I *y i v i Constructed as above described, it constitutes a cheap and convenient pumppby means of. which large quantities may be raised and discharged. l v j v I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters'l'atent- A pumping-apparatus, consisting of a central force-pump,.and two or more lift or suction-pumps, the area of the first being quite equal to' the area of both or allthe others, andso arranged that power applicd to the' main or central piston-rod is communicatedby means of a,cross-liead to both or all the other piston-rods, so that the power forcing the main or central piston downward is fully compensated o1; balanced in its asccnt,sul; stanV tially as shown and descrihediA y i i STILLMAN WHITE..
